Children’s garden event held at library

MIFFLINTOWN — While backyard gardens are just taking root, there’s one at the Juniata County Library that’s ready for a finishing touch.

Last year, Penn State Extension started a garden, located on the lower level of the library, where they grew a “pizza” garden — one with all sorts of vegetables and spices like peppers, tomatoes, oregano and basil as toppings — and some gourds and loofahs for fun.

“The gourds were harvested and dried over the winter, drilled and painted with a base coat and this Thursday from 5:30 to 7 p.m., we will be putting on the finishing touches by painting them,” explained Karen Haas, a Penn State Extension master gardener for the Juniata Valley.

The library, located at 498 Jefferson St. in Mifflintown, will host the children’s garden event, which will use the gourds grown in the garden to craft unique birdhouses.

Haas said it’s a fun, hands-on activity and all materials will be provided. The event is best suited for school-age children accompanied by an adult.

Master gardeners will be on hand to help make the garden masterpieces and answer questions. All materials will be supplied, but gourds are limited. Registration is recommended.

The master gardeners have a similar display at the Mifflin County Library in Lewistown.
