Fireworks, of course, ring in Fourth of July

LEWISTOWN — It wouldn’t be the Fourth of July without fireworks. The Juniata River Valley Chamber of Commerce Independence Day Fireworks Day should help ring in that patriotic spirit when it takes place at 9:30 p.m. Saturday in Lewistown.

The best viewing areas for the scheduled 30-minute show are Victory Park, Lewistown Junction Train Station and Downtown Lewistown. The rain date is Sunday.

It’s just one of the many things to do this weekend as the Juniata Valley prepares to celebrate Independence Day.

• Mifflin County Huskies Football Golf Tournament, 1 p.m. Friday, Lewistown Country Club, 306 Country Club Road, Lewistown, rain or shine. Registration will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, with tee off slated for 1 p.m. Teams of four cost $400 with carts including, or the cost for individuals is $100 per person. The price includes a complimentary lunch buffet and beverages, plus cash prizes too.

• 49th Annual LC Open, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Lost Creek Golf Course, 255 Lost Creek Road, Oakland Mills.

Outdoor programs at Greenwood Furnace

• Wild Edible Plants program, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Greenwood Furnace State Park, Greenwood Road, Huntingdon. Join Ranger Louie for an introduction to wild edible plants at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. This program will include a short walk to identify edible plants and taste a few. Meet at the Blacksmith Shop. Admission is free.

• Historical walking tour, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sundays through July 13, Greenwood Furnace State Park, Greenwood Road, Huntingdon. Join park staff for a walk through the historic district. Learn about the village that dominated the area for 70 years. Meet at the Blacksmith Shop.

• Guided hike, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Greenwood Furnace State Park, Greenwood Road, Huntingdon. Join park staff for a guided hike on trails that vary depending on group preference. Bring snacks, water and hiking shoes. Meet at the park office.

Gather together

Ladies Craft Day, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Paintersville CMA Church, 3195 Back Maitland Road, Lewistown. Work on any crafts you have or do an optional make-n-take instructed by Judy Haubert. Program is free, but monetary donations will be accepted for the make-n-take supplies. Door prizes will be awarded. Lunch and refreshments provided. Coffee and Canvas Benefitting Missions, 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Old Mill Coffeehouse, 14264 Route 35, Richfield. Paint a watering can full of flowers to benefit a mission trip to Guatemala. Coffee, tea and snacks provided. Sign up and pay $30. To reserve a spot, call Crystal at (570) 809-3580.

Drive-Thru Ham Loaf Dinner

Christ’s United Lutheran Church, 13765 Old Turnpike Road in Millmont will host a drive-thru ham Loaf dinner on Saturday, starting at 3:30 p.m. Dinners include ham loaf, scalloped potatoes, vegetable and applesauce.
