County road maintenance scheduled

MIFFLINTOWN — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced the following schedule of maintenance activities in Juniata County the week of June 30. PennDOT performs year-round maintenance in its mission to provide a safe, efficient transportation system, and while crews will be off Friday, July 4, to observe the Fourth of July holiday, the scope of work in Juniata County for the rest of the week is as follows:

Bridge Maintenance and Cleaning

• Route 75 at a bridge spanning Tuscarora Creek one mile south of Waterloo in Lack Township. Monday, June 30, through Thursday. PennDOT will implement single-lane closures while this work is completed.

Pennsylvania has some of the oldest bridges in the country, with an age of more than 50 years on average. Preventive maintenance is vital in extending the life of the structures. As such, PennDOT maintenance crews perform some bridge deck patching and structural repairs.

Mechanized Patching

• Route 2009 (Pine Street/Freed Street) between Route 333 (Main Street) in Thompsontown Borough and Route 2006 (Cedar Street) in Walker Township. Monday and Tuesday;

Route 2004 (Cunningham Road) between Route 2001(Industrial Park Road) and Route 2003 (Doe Run Road) in Walker Township Wednesday and Thursday. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Mechanized patching is used to patch limited roadway areas that have extensive potholes, large areas of cracked pavement, and depressions. If mechanized patching was not performed, the damaged road surface would further deteriorate, resulting in PennDOT needing to completely rebuild the road or perform more costly corrective measures.

Pipe Replacement and Cleaning

Route 3004 (Tuscarora Road) between Route 333 and Route 3007 (Stouffer Road) in Turbett Township. Monday, June 30, through Thursday, July 3. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Route 4002 (Licking Creek Drive) between Maple Road and the end of the route in Milford Township. Wednesday, July 2, and Thursday, July 3. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Pipe replacement and cleaning are essential in maintaining water flow around state roadways. Controlling water flow is one of the most important aspects of maintaining pavements. Uncontrolled water flow will damage both the pavement surface and the area under the pavement, which causes deterioration across the length of the pipe.

This schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, emergencies, or other unforeseen interruptions.

In Centre County, a radar-controlled speed display board was placed this week on Route 144 in Milesburg Borough, Centre County. It is intended to remind drivers to obey the posted speed limit and reduce speeding, a common type of aggressive driving behavior.

The board faces southbound traffic between Eagle Street and Water Street in Milesburg, in a 35 mile per hour zone. The board utilizes radar to determine the speeds of oncoming traffic and posts them to the lighted section of the sign.

The board will remain in this location for four to six weeks.

Speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors are among the leading causes of Pennsylvania crashes and fatalities. Other aggressive driving behaviors include running stop signs or red lights, passing illegally, and tailgating.

Starting at $2.99/week.
