Police: Gunshot victim’s death is under investigation
LEWISTOWN — A week after Lewistown Police Department officers responded to a residence on the 200 block of Shaw Avenue in Lewistown for a report of a male victim with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, the case remains under investigation, according to a release issued by police on Friday.
An account of the incident was included on the weekly police blotter posted on the Lewistown Police Department’s Facebook page. It stated officers responded to a Shaw Avenue residence and located a 30-year-old male with a “sucking chest wound.”
Officers began administering first aid to the male, who was not identified; however, he passed away due to the traumatic nature of the injury.
The report said officers were advised that a female was present, and the two individuals were involved in a domestic dispute prior to police being summoned to the residence.
Initially, officers could not locate the firearm at the scene and requested a criminal investigator, the report said. A detective also summoned a Pennsylvania State Police Forensic Services Unit. The report also said a search warrant for the residence was obtained.
This investigation was done in coordination with the Mifflin County Coroner, and the scene was processed as a crime scene. Typically, this is the protocol for death investigations where suspicious circumstances arise and foul play cannot be immediately ruled out, police said. The firearm was eventually found in a dresser drawer in the same room where the deceased male was located, the report said. It was also determined that a single expelled round was located in the chamber.
The report said the investigating detective interviewed the female witness, who was cooperative in answering questions.
Lewistown Fire Department officers also assisted with the removal of the body of the male victim. An autopsy was scheduled for April 20. The report said a pathologist examined the victim and the coroner will issue a final report on the cause of death.
