Penn State Extension to offer water education summit for educators
UNIVERSITY PARK — Educators or others involved in environmental education who are interested in teaching youth about water can learn about engaging tools and resources to support water education at a Penn State Extension workshop scheduled for September.
The Dive Deeper Summit will be Wednesday, Sept. 24, and Thursday, Sept. 25, at Best Western Premier, The Central Hotel and Conference Center, 800 E. Park Dr., Harrisburg.
This workshop is designed for formal and nonformal educators; K-12 teachers and environmental educators; 4-H leaders and youth program coordinators; conservation district staff and watershed professionals; outdoor educators, interpreters and nature center staff; and anyone interested in water education and water resource issues.
The summit will begin Sept. 24 with a preconference field study and an evening reception featuring an educational film screening and expert panel discussion.
On Sept. 25, participants will engage in a full-day event featuring multiple concurrent presentations, exhibits, networking opportunities and the chance to have their home drinking water tested.
Organizers noted that, among other topics, participants will:
— Gain insight from dynamic and informative speakers.
— Explore current and emerging water issues in the mid-Atlantic region and beyond.
— Discover engaging curriculum ideas to take back to their classrooms or programs.
— Expand their network with fellow educators and water resource professionals.
— Learn about new technologies to enhance their STEM and water education programming.
Organizers encourage attendees to register by Sept. 12. The summit fee is $80, and the preconference field study and evening reception each carry a fee of $25. Scholarship opportunities are available for classroom teachers in Pennsylvania K-12 schools. Scholarships cover in-person registration, including all sessions, morning refreshments, lunch, exhibits, networking and other aspects.
