Waterloo exhibit recalls mid-20th century family life

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — City folks used to order eggs by mail. Six dozen eggs were tucked into cushioned compartments inside a protective metal crate. The crate was then shipped through the U.S. mail. With a little over-easy handling, the farm-fresh eggs arrived at their destination, hopefully without being scrambled. One of these early 20th century crates is displayed in the Grout Museum’s sentimental journey through “Midwest Comforts,” a celebration of food, recipes, product advertising, and conveniences that made live easier for home cooks. “We’ve all been through a ...

Though that’s good news, it also means two-thirds did not improve significantly, which underscores how much more work must be done to create more diverse workplaces across the globe. Efforts to build more diverse workplaces may prove more ...

Pot Pie brings back memories

By Bev Kauffman Every time I make ham, chicken or beef pot pie it brings back memories of growing up in Snyder County in a big family. My mother cooked daily for 10 and the meals were almost always comfort foods. One special meal was ham potpie, bread with apple butter and cottage cheese on top. Since I wasn’t in the kitchen as a child, the recipes I’m sharing come from what I remember the dishes tasting or smelling like. Also, as I get older, I want to share the recipes to pass on to whomever might want them. Ham pot pie • 1-2 smoked ham hocks • 2 cups flour ...

Filipino breakfast is a tasty dish for any meal

By CHRISTOPHER KIMBALL Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street In Filipino homes, the smell that wakes up many families is not coffee brewing or bacon frying, but slices of garlic sizzling in oil. It’s for a fried rice that uses up the previous day’s rice and makes it delicious by packing it chock-full of crisp, toasted garlic. For their version, the cooks at Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street make golden garlic chips to mix into the rice at the end, along with a flavorful oil that infuses the entire dish. They add chicken to transform it into a main dish that can be eaten any time ...
