Offseason activities begin at area tracks

The final green flag in Central Pennsylvania racing recently fell, but there's plenty of action around area race tracks.Port Royal and Lincoln speedways recently held awards banquets. Port Royal crowned champions Lucas Wolfe (410 sprint cars), Mike Lupfer (late models), Andrew Yoder (econo late models), Jason Zook (xtreme stocks) and Jeff Miller (305 sprint cars). Dylan Cisney was 410 runner-up and most improved driver. Ryan Taylor won the sportsmanship award.Lupfer claimed his second consecutive late model title. Nassib a Bednarik finalist

From staff reportsUNIVERSITY PARK - Senior defensive end Carl Nassib (West Chester, Pa.) is one of three finalists for the Bednarik Award for the College Defensive Player of the Year. Nassib and the other finalists will be honored at the ESPN College Football Awards Show presented by Home Depot in Atlanta on Thursday, Dec. 10. There's one final sprint car race in Pennsylvania this weekend at Susquehanna Speedway.The Final Showdown for 410 and 358 sprint cars is scheduled today at 2 p.m.; $10,000 awaits the 410 winner. Look for several invaders to challenge the PA Posse stars.With the program being the final event under Todd and Rhonda Fisher's promotion, plus rainchecks in play from Oct. 18, every attempt will be made to run this final show. The World Finals are being held in Charlotte, N.C. this weekend.Qualifying started Thursday night. Sprint cars, late models and big block modifieds are included in the program. Familiar sprint car drivers planning to attend include Ryan Smith, Brock Zearfoss, Brent Marks, Lance Dewease, Greg Hodnett, Cody Darrah and Lucas Wolfe. Susquehanna Speedway Park is the lone area racetrack in operation this weekend. The small block sportsman modifieds join street and xtreme stocks, legend cars, micro sprints and more for Candy Bowl XI, which starts Saturday at 2 p.m. A Sunday rain date is available.The York County oval will use the same format two weeks from now when the Final Showdown closes the 2015 racing season with 410 and 358 sprint cars on the program. The World of Outlaws sprint cars invade Port Royal Speedway for the ninth time tonight. The Mid Atlantic Modified series will make its first appearance at the Juniata County oval. Gates open at 2 pm. Racing gets underway at 5.Both PA and Outlaw drivers have won during the series at Port Royal. Lynn Paxton won the initial program held in 1979. Donnie Kreitz Jr became the second winner in 1986.
