Outlaws tune up part of double sprint car event

Although the racing season is winding down, two area speedways present high-dollar races this weekend.Port Royal Speedway is in action today with a double sprint car show. The United Racing Club 360 sprint class is making its first appearance at the Juniata County oval since 2013. The 410 sprint cars tune up for next Saturday's World of Outlaws invasion at the 1/2-mile oval.The 410 drivers will time trial and qualify with the same format used during Outlaw qualifying. The fourth annual Blue Collar Classic Challenge for 305 sprint cars will be presented tonight at Port Royal Speedway. At least 50 sprint cars are pre-registered for the program, which gets underway at 5 p.m.Drivers from four states are expected, along with 410 sprint car drivers Tyler Bear, a former PASS 305 champion, and Lewistown's Vince Snyder. Bear is a former PASS 305 sprint car champion. The 53rd annual National Open at Williams Grove Speedway is still scheduled to run.Who are the drivers to beat in this years race? Obviously Donny Schatz, a five-time open winner comes to mind. Schatz is having a record year already registering his 30th win last weekend at Michigan's Berlin Speedway. Donnie Kreitz Jr. has been forced to call it a career in sprint car racing.Kreitz received reports from his doctor earlier this week informing him it would be unwise to continue racing. Kreitz suffered a concussion in the final 2013 race at Susquehanna Speedway. Kreitz returned to competition last season with no side effects. Earlier this summer, during the month of June, concussion like symptoms returned. Kreitz developed short term memory problems, which continue.Kreitz hasn't been specific as to what his actual diagnosis is, but he is definitely saying his race driving days are done. ...

The Charlie Paige era of Selinsgrove Speedway promotion will conclude tonight with the 33rd running of the Jim Nace Memorial National Open for sprint cars.Fred Rahmer won five National Opens prior to retiring. Greg Hodnett and Todd Shaffer are four-time winners. Lance Dewease and Pat Cannon own three victories apiece. The 35-lap A-main pays the winner $10,000. Last place receives $400.This is the sixth year the race honors Nace, who passed away in November 2009 after a lengthy bout with cancer. The biggest race of the year is scheduled for tonight at Port Royal Speedway.The 48th annual Tuscarora 50 for sprint cars is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. The econo late models are also in action in a championship event.Greg Hodnett is the defending Tuscarora 50 champion. Last year's program drew 41 cars. Tony Stewart's All Star Circuit of Champions sanction the event, which features a $45,000 purse.
