Special teams impress
UNIVERSITY PARK — Nobody will call Penn State’s 34-0 win over Florida International on Saturday the prettiest game they’ve ever seen.
In fact, it wasn’t very pretty for much of it despite the defense pitching a shutout.
“We’re playing a bunch of young guys, and it felt like that at times,” PSU coach James Franklin said.
The offense sputtered through a lot of it, and QB Drew Allar didn’t look like himself for a good portion.
One aspect no one will fault, however, are the special team units.
For starters, Gabe Nwosu punted three times after not needing to do it at all against Nevada in Week 1. Nwosu boomed a punt 67 yards, and all three punts were inside the FIU 20-yard line.
Fans gave a big cheer after the 67-yarder that changed field position.
“You got a chance to see what we’ve seen all camp with Gabe,” Franklin said.
Nwosu beat out last year’s starting punter, Riley Thompson, for the starting job out of camp.
“Me and Riley are close,” Nwosu said. “Yes, we’re competing, but we’re friends at the end of the day. We push each other in every way possible.”
The 6-foot-6, 297-pound punter and kickoff specialist could be an option for long-distance field goals at some point this season. Nwosu confirmed on Saturday that he hit a 62-yard field goal during camp inside Beaver Stadium.
He’s never attempted a field goal in a game before, but he’s open to the possibility.
Dominic DeLuca, who is a former walk-on and special teams captain, blocked a punt in the first half. He also made three tackles for the game.
“We always talk about expecting to be free and just keep on going,”
DeLuca said. “Expect that you’re going to be the one to block it. I was able to come off scot-free. No one touched me, and I was able to come off the edge.”
Ryan Barker hit a pair of field goals to go to 6-for-7 on the season after kicks of 41 and 34 yards. His only miss was blocked on a 53-yard attempt at the end of the first half.
“We’ve shown we have a chance to win games on special teams,” Franklin said. “These first couple weeks, it’s been a real positive.”
