Lady Lions mauled by host Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Penn State Lady Lions fell to Minnesota 90-54 in the team’s first Big Ten Conference road game on Saturday, continuing a slide that has seen four losses in the past six games.

Gabby Elliott led the Lady Lions (9-4, 0-2 Big Ten) with a career-best 19 points, while Jayla Oden had eight points and Grace Hill added seven points. The Golden Gophers (13-1, 1-1) dominated the contest almost from the opening tip as they led 24-9 after the first quarter and 44-18 at the half.

Tori McKinney sparked Minnesota’s offense with a game-high 25 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 3 of 7 from three-point land. She also was a perfect 8 of 8 from the foul line and pulled down five rebounds, dished out four assists, made three steals and blocked a shot. The Golden Gophers had four players in double figures as they also got 17 points from Amaya Battle, 15 points from Annika Stewart and 11 more from Mallory Heyer.

Penn State’s Gracie Merkle was held scoreless despite playing nearly 22 minutes and only took one shot from the floor. She did have four rebounds to go with four turnovers.

Minnesota outrebounded the Lady Lions by a 33-30 margin. Penn State also committed 24 turnovers and shot 38.5 percent from the field.

Penn State returns home to the Bryce Jordan Center and will face off against the Iowa Hawkeyes in a 1 p.m. contest on New Year’s Day.
