LEWISTOWN — The Mifflin County softball team couldn’t get much going in their 14-2 loss Tuesday against Altoona.
Despite leading 2-1 after three innings, the Huskies gave up five in the fourth and eight in the fifth to be mercy ruled after five innings.
“We didn’t show up,” Mifflin County coach Craig Weston said. “From the start of stretching to infield, out(field) pregame, we didn’t show up on the field. That’s not taking anything away from Altoona, but we didn’t show up.”
Carly Dickson and Mya Felmlee each delivered with RBI singles in the first inning to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead over Mountain Lion starting pitcher Charli Schneider. Schnieder settled in, however, and pitched a complete game with five hits and one earned run allowed. Felmlee finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a double on top of her RBI single.
“Yeah, we scored a couple runs early,” Weston said. “Our swings weren’t there, obviously, they made some fielding miscues. I mean, we hit the ball, but I am going to go right back to the fact that when we get on the field, you gotta be ready to go. As the coach, I will take the blame for that.”
Piper Specht started in the circle for the Huskies, pitching four innings with eight earned runs on eight hits. Macy Pietzsch replaced Specht in the fifth but didn’t record an out as six more earned runs crossed the plate.
“These kids have thrown, I mean, we are struggling a little bit,” Weston noted. “They are battlers, they will keep fighting. We got to figure it out. Obviously, it is still early in the season, we have lots of time.”
The Huskies fall to 0-3 to start the season. They will look to get their first win of the season at 4:15 p.m. Thursday against Chambersburg.
“We play in the Mid-Penn Conference, there are no easy ones,” Weston said. “There are no guaranteed wins, you gotta show up and be ready to play.”
