Husky competitive spirit exits in state semis
JOHNSTOWN — The Mifflin County Huskies cheerleaders saw their quest for a PIAA Competitive Spirit Championship end in the semifinal round on Saturday at the War Memorial in Johnstown. The Huskies delivered a sharp, high-energy routine in one of the most competitive fields in the state, capping a season defined by steady improvement and strong team chemistry.

Smith races to record
to win 800
UNIVERSITY PARK — The Mifflin County Huskies had a banner day athte Kevin Dare Invitational, hosted by Penn State, on Saturday. Carter Smith turned in a record-breaking time of 1:49.33 to take top honors in the 800. Husky teammate Wyatt Kauffman closely followed him across the finish line for a 1:53.98 to place third. Reese Cubbison dominated the 3,000, taking first place in 8:44.88. The 4×800 relay team of Smith, Kauffman, Cubbison and Aidan Scavitti finished the podium series with another first-place time of 8:07.88.
“The rest of the team continues to make progress towards their goals with most achieving a season best mark,” Husky head coach Tamara Sechler said.
For the Mifflin County girls, Taylor Kenepp set the school record for the indoor 200 in 27.26, while Adalyn Ross placed eighth in pole vault at 9-6.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Cardinals rally to beat Belleville Christian
BELLEVILLE – Izzy Weaver scored all six of her points in the first quarter as Belleville Christian capitalized to take an early lead on visiting Forbes Road on Saturday. The Cardinals (7-6) regrouped after that and cruised to a 55-33 non-conference win on Saturday.
Sydney Gelvin scored a game high 19 points and Kinsley Small added 15 points as those two alone outscored the Thunder (3-6). Gelvin tossed in eight points in the second quarter as Forbes Road rallied to outscore Belleville Christian 13-2 in the second quarter to lead 22-13 at intermission. Ketelyn Renno had the Thunder’s only points.
Elaina Peachey drilled a three-pointer in the third and Lilly Yoder hit for eight points in the fourth to account for much of the Belleville Christian offense. Abby Yoder added two points in the third and four more in the fourth.
Lilly Yoder finished with nine points and Abby Yoder added eight for Thunder. Belleville Christian hosts Harrisburg Academy today.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Forbes Road flies past Thunder
BELLEVILLE – Ethan Renno and Grant Yoder each scored 12 points for Belleville Christian School in the Thunder’s 67-46 non-conference loss to Forbes Road on Saturday. Devin Yoder’s three-pointer was Belleville Christian’s only offense in the first quarter as the Thunder (4-5) trailed 17-3 early. Jacoby Knepper accounted for nine of the Cardinals’ points. He finished the game with 20 points.
Renno had a pair of treys in the second quarter and Yoder and Bryson Peachey each added four points as the Thunder trailed 31-20 at the half. Michael Strait scored eight points of his game-high 25 points in the frame to lead Forbes Road (6-7).
In the third quarter, Peachey, Renno and Yoder each tallied four points as the Trojans trailed 50-34. Knepper exploded for nine points in the period and Silas Hollibaugh added six, with a pair of threes. Gibbons and Yoder each had four points in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals pulled away as Straight answered with 11 points.

Thunder squads swept by Forbes Road
BELLEVILLE – The Belleville Christian School junior high school boys and girls basketball teams both lost to visiting Forbes Road on Saturday. The Thunder girls dropped a 44-13 decision as Harper Zook scored eight points to lead Belleville Christian. On the boys side, the Thunder lost 50-42 as Alex Reed finished with a team-best 23 points, while teammates Landon Yoder had seven points and Grant Peachey, with a pair of threes, added six points.

Juniata matmen go 1-5 at Claysburg Duals
CLAYSBURG – The Juniata Indians topped host Claysburg-Kimmel for the only win at the Claysburg-Kimmel Duals on Saturday, finishing 1-5 overall.
In the opening round, Juniata dropped a 58-18 decision to Central then the Indians lost 53-22 to Moshannon Valley in round two. In round three, Juniata fell to River Valley 54-22 and, after a bye in round four, the Indians lost 48-24 to Westmont Hilltop in the fifth round. In round six, Juniata doubled up Claysburg-Kimmel, 42-21, before losing 42-30 to Meyersdale to close out the tournament.
Huntingdon went 6-0 to earn the Duals title in the 10-team field. Rounding out the field were: Central (5-1); Glendale (4-2); Meyersdale, Moshannon Valley, River Valley and Westmont Hilltop, all 3-3; Northern Bedford (2-4); Juniata; and Claysburg-Kimmel (0-6).
Individually, at 152 pounds, Ryder Smith posted a perfect 6-0 mark for Juniata with four falls and two wins via forfeit, while Kelton Bonnell went 6-1 at 285 with a pair of falls, technical fall and a win via forfeit. At 145, Ty Fahnestock went 3-3.
