Juniata College routed by WestConn in Landmark opener

HUNTINGDON — Juniata College won its opening two games of the football season by a combined three points. The Eagles haven’t come close the previous three weeks, falling by average of 30 points.

On Saturday, Juniata welcomed Western Connecticut State University, or WestConn — the newest member of the Landmark Conference — to the friendly confines of Knox Stadium in Huntingdon.

Trailing the Wolves 6-0, Juniata answered with a 67-yard touchdown run and successful two-pointer by Jordan Horm to grab an 8-6 lead with 10:30 to play in the first quarter.

It was all WestConn after that as the Wolves rolled up 530 yards of total offense as quarterback Jahsir Gayle threw for 191 yards and four touchdowns and three different running backs ran for TDs as the Wolves cruised to a 63-15 victory on Saturday.

The Eagles, who saw quarterback Ethan Eisenberg complete 8 of 14 passes for only 41 yards and one INT, trailed 43-15 at the half.

Of the four local players, only former Midd-West standout Carter Sauer saw action for the Eagles (2-3). Midd-West’s Parker Boop, Juniata’s Makih Hunt and Mount Union’s Naiym Francis did not play.

The Eagles travel to Catholic on Saturday.

LOCK HAVEN 38, BLOOMSBURG 17

BLOOMSBURG — Lock Haven quarterback Jackson Ostrowsky threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns, and the Bald Eagles’ defense forced three turnovers in a dominating win at Bloomsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action.

Ostrowsky returned to the lineup and sparked the offense by hitting on 21 of 28 passing for 303 yards and the three aforementioned TDs. Cureem Hathcock and Tucker Teats each rushed for TDs as Lock Haven rolled up 402 total yards of offense. Justin Popovich hauled in two touchdown catches and Jaiden Huntington finished with six catches for 106 yards and a TD.

Defensively, Tyler Merwarth and Quiyon McMillan both had interceptions for the defense. LucRichard Rameau finished with a team-high nine tackles.

Lock Haven (2-3, 1-1 PSAC East) led 21-17 at halftime and shutout the host Huskies 17-0 in the second half.

The Bald Eagles return home to host No. 4 Kutztown at 6 p.m. Saturday.

KUTZTOWN 49, SHIPPENSBURG 0

KUTZTOWN — Kutztown quarterback Judd Novak threw for 287 yards for three touchdowns and Stevn Burkhardt rushed for a pair of scores, including a 91-yard scamper as the Golden Bears overwhelmed Shippensburg 49-0 Saturday in a PSAC East matchup.

Novak sandwiched TD passes to Trevor Amorim — 42 and 32 yards — around a 1-yard TD run by Burkhardt as Shippensburg trailed 21-0

at halftime.

Burkhardt’s 91-yard scoring run and Novak hit Noah Kracyla for a 50-yard strike to make it 35-0 in the third quarter. Michael LeMay notched a 49-yard INT return in the fourth quarter and Antonino Russo followed with a 5-yard TD to set the final.

Burkhardt finished with 149 rushing yards as the Golden Bears amassed 259 yards on the ground. As a team, the Raiders managed only 94 yards.

Shippensburg QB Riley Gunnels hit on 10 of 21 passes for 32 yards with 1 INT. He was also sacked twice.

The Raiders host Millersville at 1 p.m. Saturday.
