Juniata County Marching Band ‘parties like their parents’
Editor’s note: This is the second in a series of stories featuring high school marching bands from across the Juniata River Valley.
MIFFLINTOWN — You’ve seen the Dr. Rick commercials for Progressive insurance. Those annoying spoofs where the adult children are on adventures and turning into versions of their parents. Their parenta-life coach is on a mission to combat parentamorphosis and break them from their old-age habits.
The Juniata County Marching Band has revered that maternal and paternal behavior with this year’s show theme, “Party Like Your Parents.”
The band has assembled a variety of well-known hits such as “Funkytown” by Lipps Inc. from the 1980s. Other show tunes include “Hard to Handle” by the Black Crowes from the 1990s, along with “Toxic” by Britney Spears from the 2000s and “Party Anthem Rock” by LMFAO from the 2010s.
“This year we actually had a good collection of songs we wanted to do, the challenge was finding a common thread to link things together,” said Brad Eargle, the Juniata High School music director.
“Some years, the theme is there and we’re looking for pieces, and other years we’re searching for a theme,” Eargle added. “As always, there were more pieces on the short list, but those four taught a lot of what we wanted to cover this fall and challenged the kids appropriately.”
The marching band’s numbers have grown to 61 this year.
So far, so good, Eargle said. “The kids have grown a lot since the beginning of summer and are really playing and marching the show well. We graduated a lot of production last year, so I was a little curious to see who would step up and fill some of those spots this year. I’ve been pleased with how well we’ve been able to move forward.”
The drum majors this year are seniors Jacee Price and Kennedy Seigler-Lewis.
The highlight of the marching band season is a planned trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., in June 2026. Eargle said the trip had become a tradition and the band marches in the Disney parade every four years.
