David Gravel captures Summer finale, 100th win

MECHANICSBURG — After a stunning upset by TJ Stutts Friday night, David Gravel had to wait another day to score his 100th career World of Outlaws feature win.

Gravel held off Donny Schatz to score that win in the Summer Nationals Finale Saturday night at Williams Grove Speedway. Gravel’s win was worth $20,000.

Local racer Stutts, of Liverpool, delivered a huge upset Friday night beating Gravel for his first career Outlaws win.

There was no upset Saturday night as the Outlaws point leader picked up his ninth career Grove win and 12th series win of the season. As a teenager, Gravel was a regular competitor at the Grove making the tow from Watertown, Conn.

His first career Outlaws win came in 2011 at the Talladega Short Track in Alabama.

“To achieve this milestone beating Donny Schatz at Williams Grove is pretty crazy,” Gravel said. “What a place to do it.”

“We haven’t been in victory lane here in this car,” Gravel said. “This

is a really hard track to win at.”

Schatz kept pressure on Gravel right until the end of the 30-lap feature.

“I felt like I was hanging on there at the end,” Gravel said. “I saw

Donny poking his nose under me. I felt like if I kept doing what I was

doing, it would be hard for him to pass me.”

“When he had the lead and went low, that’s how I got big runs on him,”

Gravel said. “I thought as long as I exited off four, I’d be okay. I

was running the middle on entry. It was good enough to get the job

done. I was a little nervous going into the feature.”

“We were hanging on a little bit at the end, but overall, I thought we

had a really good racecar. We beat probably the three best Williams Grove cars over the last 10 years.”

Gravel started fourth as Schatz and Daryn Pittman battled for the lead during the opening laps. After passing Carson Macedo, Gravel settled into third.

Pittman took the lead for a moment, but Schatz got back by off the fourth turn.

Gravel passed Pittman as they raced off the fourth turn with 11 laps

completed. He took the lead from Schatz on lap 13 with a second turn pass as they raced through traffic. Schatz returned the pass one lap later.

A caution slowed the race. Schatz controlled the restart with Gravel in pursuit at lap 15.

Gravel was getting through the corners better than Schatz. They raced side-by-side down the frontstretch and into the first turn. Gravel secured the lead with 10 laps to go as Marks passed Pittman for third.

A final yellow reset the field. Schatz challenged Gravel over the

final laps, but couldn’t make the pass.

Gravel became the eighth driver to record 100-plus Outlaws wins

beating Schatz and Marks.

Pittman and Justin Peck completed the top five. Gio Scelzi, Carson

Macedo, Lance Dewease, Sheldon Haudenschild and Danny Dietrich rounded out the top 10.

Marks set quick time over the 33-car field with a lap of 17.034.

Marks, Gravel, Macedo and Pittman won the eight-lap heat races. Schatz won the dash. Anthony Macri won the Last Chance Showdown.

Steve Kinser has the most Outlaws wins with 690. Sammy Swindell is

second with 394 and Schatz third with 314. Mark Kinser has 203 and

Doug Wolfgang 140. Danny Lasoski is sixth with 122, Joey Saldana

seventh with 105 and now Gravel at 100.

Gravel is in good position to win his first series title this season.

Starting at $2.99/week.
