Juniata’s hot bats outslug Dragons

MIFFLINTOWN — The Juniata Indians have watched opposing teams post some pretty big numbers on the softball scoreboard this season.

Juniata is hoping those tables might have turned a bit in its favor. On Friday, the Indians blasted rival East Juniata 15-2 in five innings. On Saturday, Juniata outslugged Lewisburg 13-11 in a non-league clash to improve to 2-5 on the season.

The Indians pounded out 22 hits in racking up their 13 runs; they also committed seven errors. Six different Juniata players had three hits: Ashley Piper, Sophia Smith, Destiny Yohn, Addison Rutherford, Malia Imes and Julia Martin.

Piper and Martin each scored three times for the Indians, who scored in every inning by the fourth. The two teams put on quite an offensive display until Yohn — who placed Rutherford in the third — quieted the Green Dragons’ bats in the fourth.

Lewisburg opened the scoring in the first as Morgan Shannon smacked an RBI single. The Indians answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame as Yohn grounded out and Rutherford walked to drive in runs.

Nora Hockenbrock grounded out to drive in a Lewisburg run in the second, but Juniata responded with a three-spot as Martin singled to right, Piper doubled and Yohn grounded out, each scoring one run.

Lewisburg tacked on a five-spot on three hits to take the lead, 7-5, in the third inning. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by Herianne Pagan that drove in two.

The Indians took control for good in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on nine hits to take the lead, 11-9. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by Martin that drove in one. The Indians added two more in the sixth.

Yohn finished with three RBIs, while Smith and Martin each added a pair. Piper, Rutherford, Martin and Kalynn Brown each doubled.

Piper and Martin each scored three times, while Smith, Rutherford and Imes each scored twice.

Rutherford went 2 2/3 innings, allowing four hits, seven runs, striking out three and walking two. Yohn got the win in relief, allowing three hits, four runs, striking out eight and walking two in 4 1/3 innings.

LEWISBURG — Issabella Snyder and Krista Whitesel each scored goals for the Mifflin County Huskies, but host Lewisburg controlled the rest of the action for a 13-2 non-league victory on Saturday.

“It was a well-fought game,” said Huskies head coach Robert Nulton. “The offense proved we could get it up the field and give them a fight while the defense did an amazing job holding off Lewisburg’s offense.”

Snyder, Whitesel and Madison Keefer led Mifflin County with shots on goal. Sophie Heider turned in 16 saves in goal, “ensuring that we kept the score down and remained competitive throughout the game,” Nulton added.

Lorynn Knepp, Linsey Wagner, Ava Kelly, Lia Barahona, Emmaleigh Harmon, Zoey Foltz, Alex Rupert and Carson Moore-Aldrich also each contributed in many ways including regaining many possessions against Lewisburg.

“They are fierce girls who have continued to prove that they are not willing to back down when times get tough,” Nulton said. “I am truly grateful that they keep showing up even when the games are hard.”

Mifflin County travels to Central Dauphin East on Monday.
