Neighboring states lose out to low-tax Pa.

Editorials

It’s a story common for regions of West Virginia that border Pennsylvania, Ohio and Kentucky. A recent college graduate of West Virginia University lands their first job in Pennsylvania. When it comes to deciding which state is more appealing on the tax front, the choice is clear: Pennsylvania. The same goes for Ohio and Kentucky. How many high-income professionals work in Wheeling, Parkersburg or Huntington, yet live in Ohio or Kentucky because of a lower personal income tax burden? And now, instead of proposing a meaningful plan to make West Virginia more competitive with its ...

Jack Hughes or Eileen Gu?

Editorials

The Winter Olympics had its thrills and spills — and a deep philosophical divide represented by two American, or American-born, athletes. Jack Hughes, the gold medal-winning American hockey player for the U.S. team, gave voice to a patriotic reflex in his heartfelt expressions of love of his country. Eileen Gu, the gold medal-winning American-born free-style skier competing for China, exemplified a cosmopolitan ideal that floats above mere nationhood. This difference — between the bloody-mouthed hockey player draped in his own country’s flag and the exceptionally talented ...

Eagles’ rebound fitting for America’s 250th anniversary

Editorials

Eric Beiter, city council president, recently observed that the number of bald eagles in Lycoming County has rebounded. “I remember being a kid growing up and they were nonexistent and now we have quite a few,” Beiter told city council during a recent meeting, as reported in last Monday’s edition of the Williamsport Sun-Gazette. “I would not even venture to guess how many.” In the successes of fostering a healthy population, we see a conservation effort rooted in tangible, measurable results — and we are grateful to see that success. Preserving habitat and managing ...

Some ways of restoring Britain

Editorials

There’s a revolution brewing across the Big Pond. The British people were already fed up with the Labour government headed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer. And then the man Starmer appointed to be ambassador to the United States — Peter Mandelson — was exposed as having a deep friendship with sex predator Jeffrey Epstein, even after Epstein was convicted on charges of sex with a minor in 2008. Mandelson is now under investigation for possibly passing sensitive government information to Epstein. Starmer is viewed as being crippled by these revelations and losing support within his ...

‘The Addams Family’ is more than a musical

Local Columns

This weekend I had the privilege of attending the Mifflin County High School Drama Club’s production of “The Addams Family,” and I was absolutely blown away. The talent on that stage was incredible, but what impressed me even more was the dedication behind it, the long hours of rehearsal, memorizing lines, choreography practiced until it felt like second nature, and the courage it takes to step out on that stage. The commitment shown by these young performers was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Equally deserving of recognition are the directors, crew members, technicians, ...

What is a patriot?

Editorials

Today’s Sentinel features our JV magazine spotlighting patriots. When we think of patriots, we often picture those who serve in the military. While they certainly embody patriotism, the definition reaches far beyond traditional roles. Patriots can be found throughout our communities — in many forms and walks of life. The Juniata Valley is a special place, rich in history and grounded in the values of small-town living. It is a community where neighbors know and care about one another, where you can choose to live quietly or be deeply involved. Local businesses, institutions, and ...
