Shirley Ann McKelvey

Shirley, a woman of unwavering faith and deep convictions, passed away on April 18, 2026, at the age of 90.

Born on July 7, 1935, she was a true descendant of the pioneers of the Seven Mountains region of Pennsylvania and a “straight shooter” in every sense of the word. By the age of 12, she could handle a rifle with precision – a skill that mirrored her adult ability to quickly discern the best qualities in people. Shirley had no room in her life for meanness and loved being surrounded by congenial company. She was also a legendary homemaker and loved to entertain guests: to sit at her table for her famous pork and sauerkraut was to know true Pennsylvania hospitality.

Shirley’s life was defined by a refusal to follow the status quo. In the 1960s, she found a diverse group of singers and musicians at church, and her moral compass was always set toward justice. Alongside her husband, she worked at a Baltimore bus station during a pivotal era for the country; there, they acted as early pioneers for race relations, choosing humanity and respect over the prejudices of the day.

Shirley’s life was anchored by deep, transformative friendships and family bonds; she was a steady presence in the lives of those she loved. Her dear friend, Audrey Falk, was the one who finally convinced her to stop smoking. Another close friend, Barbara Best, helped her embrace the ultimate truth that love is universal. Through those friendships and their children – both straight and gay – Shirley came to understand that love knows no boundaries and belongs to everyone. She was also supported by her lifelong friend, Gayle Flick, and shared a very special and close relationship with her niece, Audrey Zimmerman.

In her later years, Shirley was surrounded by a dedicated community of good people who provided care and companionship, including beloved Pastor Luke Shinskie, Vicki Hower, Kathy “Mac,” Rosie Long, Franny Shirk, Edie Swank, Georgia Olsen, Matthew Parkes, and Shawn Vargo.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Gene, and her son Rick. She is survived by her devoted son, Tim; her grandson, Ricky, and his wife, Kelly; and her great-grandchildren, Gavin, Olivia, and Caleb.

In honor of Shirley’s memory, the family asks that you stand up to meanness wherever you find it and always remember that love is the only universal language.
