Michael Dean Burd
Michael Dean Burd, 51, of Kihei, Hawaii, passed away due to heart issues on Monday, July 1, 2024, at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Born Oct. 6, 1972, in Lewistown, he was the son of Bonnie (Hesketh) and Rodger “Dean” Burd of Pueblo, Co., who survive.
Michael is also survived by two brothers, Nicholas Burd of Pueblo, Co., and Robert Burd and wife, Kelli, of Palmyra; two uncles, Robert Watson of Lewistown, and Harry “Alan” Burd of Shoemakersville; three nephews, Andrew, Christian, and Eric Burd; and his treasured West Highland Terrier, Macallan.
Having worked in the hotel industry for most of his professional career, Michael spent more than a decade employed by Marriott. Most recently, he was Director of Finance at Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club in Lahaina, Hawaii, and had previously worked and resided in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Michael was actively involved in his communities, providing volunteer relief efforts following Hurricanes Irma and Maria in the Virgin Islands in 2017, as well as helping those displaced by the Lahaina wildfires of 2023. He was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Maui.
Michael’s free time was spent traveling, indulging in new experiences, and planning his next trip. His hobbies included reading, swimming, and doting on Macallan. Michael enjoyed 80s music and live performances and was a wine and sushi connoisseur. He was quick to make new friends and could always be counted on to share his knowledge, time, and experiences with everyone in his life.
Cremation arrangements were overseen by Nakamura Mortuary in Wailuku, Hawaii.
Michael’s Maui friends and coworkers held a Hawaiian Flower Ceremony and tree dedication in his honor on Monday, July 8, at Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club on Ka’anapali Beach. A celebration of Michael’s life will be held for family and friends at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Maui United Way Fire Disaster Relief effort, www.mauiunitedway.org/reliefinfo or the American Heart Association.
