Penn Highlands nudges Nassau, 79-76

BETHLEHEM – Pennsylvania Highlands was able to grind out a 79-76 overtime victory over Nassau Community College in the consolation game of the Northampton Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday inside the Arthur L. Scott Spartan Center.

The Black Bears and Lions battled to a 66-all tie after regulation before Penn Highlands outscored Nassau 13-10 in the overtime period, giving the squad its first victory of the season (1-1).

Penn Highlands turned in another strong game defensively by recording eight steals and forcing 14 Lions turnovers. The Black Bears totaled 19 points off the takeaways.

Offensively, the Black Bears knocked down 16 3-pointers after posting an 8-for-36 mark from behind the arc in Saturday’s opener. Jayvien Brumbaugh (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) was 5-for-6 from 3-point territory to compile 15 points off the bench.

Desmond Handon Jr. (Baltimore, MD/Carver Vo-Tech) led Penn Highlands in scoring for the second consecutive game, finishing with 23 points while pulling down 11 rebounds to post the team’s first double-double of the year. Handon also added five assists.

BJ Lavender (Tampa, FL/Jule F. Sumner) tallied 14 points, while Ahmad Boone (Toledo, OH/Jesup Wakeman Scott) totaled 11 points and six rebounds. Black Bears big man Victor Raymond (Wilmington, DE/Rainier Beach) posted nine rebounds and three blocks to go along with six points.

Penn Highlands will travel to Penn State Greater Allegheny for its next matchup on Tuesday night.
