Science is fallible, but truths in the Bible never change

With the continuing challenge of the pandemic, everyone in the world should be taking a dose of humility. An invisible bacteria has caused the whole world to make major adjustments. If anything, this demonstrates that human beings are not in control and this should be a time for recognizing our Creator. The Bible has numerous warnings against the dangers of pride. “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). “Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice” (Proverbs 13:10). “All of you, clothe yourselves with ...

Reformation recital slated Oct. 31

LEWISTOWN — The 31st annual Reformation Recital will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lewistown. The recital celebrates the 504th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation and pays tribute to Martin Luther nailing the 95 Theses to the Catholic church in Wittenburg. This year’s recital also falls on St. John’s 225th anniversary. Luther’s act started the Protestant Reformation, said Scott Price, publicity chair for St. John’s. Price said Luther nailed the 95 Theses — or points of discussion — in an effort to begin a conversation ...

Persecution will come

Last week I received an email from a good friend in upstate New York. He was asking for prayer for a friend who works at a university in the South. It would seem as though the “powers that be” in the university have set to work firing anyone who claims the name of Christ. I responded to my friend by saying I would pray, but I also noted that in 5-10 years, this will be the norm. No longer will people be hired and fired on the basis of competency and job performance, but on the basis of other criteria, such as religion and beliefs. His response: “sad, but true.” For ...

3 years after Pittsburgh synagogue attack, trial ahead

PITTSBURGH (AP) — As the three-year mark since the massacre at the Tree of Life synagogue approaches, survivors are planning now-familiar annual rituals of remembrance, the criminal case involving the suspect plods on, and the site is in line for restoration. The landmark synagogue in Pittsburgh’s leafy Squirrel Hill neighborhood remains dormant, but a renowned architect is among those working to transform the site where 11 people were killed in America’s deadliest antisemitic attack. No trial date is in sight for the suspect, Robert G. Bowers. Nor is there any indication the ...

Have you lifted your hand in service to the Lord?

Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. Genesis 14:18 Who was this guy called Melchizedek, priest of God Most High? The one who set wine and bread before Abram and the king of Sodom. He also blessed Abram and made sure he realized that his victory had come from God. “And blessed be God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand,” Genesis14:20. This priest not only blesses Abram, he also blesses God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth. Isn’t it strange that he didn’t say Maker of heaven and earth? When I ...
