A few years ago, I stumbled across a little book by Martin Luther (1483-1546) called “A Simple Way to Pray.” The story behind the book is that Luther’s barber, Master Peter Beskendorf, asked him the simple but important question – how do I pray? Of course, Master Peter’s question resembles that of the disciples in Luke 11. After hearing Jesus pray, one of His disciples asked, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1). This morning as I sit down to write, my mind goes a million directions. I think partly because we had the COVID visitor at our house for several weeks. It’s caused me to pause and think more seriously about life. God has been gracious, and I feel I’m learning some marvelous things through recent down days. Was it fun being so sick? Definitely not! In 1741, Jonathan Edwards, was concerned with the judgment of God on sinful people. So, he delivered his most famous sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” Edwards spoke of the wrath people rightly faced when they confronted the judgment of a God who was angry at the way the people failed to do what they were called to do.
