AG Task Force seizes firearms, makes arrests ahead of NFL Draft

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday announced several arrests and the seizure of six firearms, along with ammunition and accessories, following three recent search warrant operations carried out by the Allegheny County Gun Violence Task Force.

The warrants were executed March 18 and March 19, about a month before the NFL Draft was scheduled to take place in Pittsburgh, an event expected to draw hundreds of thousands of fans to the region.

The Office of Attorney General-led task force, working with Allegheny County agencies and police departments in Pittsburgh, McKees Rocks and Monroeville, conducted the searches that resulted in the arrests and recovery of the firearms.

“With the NFL Draft on the horizon — and the expected gathering of hundreds of thousands of football fans in Pittsburgh — we have collaborated with partners in recent weeks to remove dozens of firearms and dangerous offenders from western Pennsylvania communities,” Sunday said in a statement. “While this sweep was contained to Allegheny County, we have made significant busts there and in neighboring counties that will go a long way in improving public safety.”

Mike Vogel, chief of the Allegheny County Housing Authority Police Department, said the seizures were the result of coordinated work among multiple agencies.

“The recent seizures of illegal firearms, and the arrests connected to those weapons, are the result of relentless teamwork and a shared commitment to protecting our communities,” Vogel said. “Every gun taken off the street represents a life potentially saved and a neighborhood made safer.”

Authorities said the search warrants were carried out at three locations:

• McKees Rocks: On Tuesday, March 19, agents working with McKees Rocks Police, Allegheny County SWAT and the Allegheny County Housing Authority Police Department executed a search warrant on Etna Street after a juvenile posted photos on social media showing numerous firearms. Officers seized three firearms — one reported stolen — along with magazines, ammunition, marijuana and Ecstasy pills. Two juvenile males were charged.

• Rankin: Also on March 19, agents with the Allegheny County Police Department, Allegheny County Housing Police and Monroeville Police executed a warrant at a residence on Dorothy Drive. Officers seized a Glock 9mm pistol along with magazines and ammunition. Jailen D. Mitchell, 19, was charged.

• Pittsburgh: On March 18, agents with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and Pittsburgh SWAT executed a search warrant on Greenbush Street in the Mount Washington neighborhood. Officers recovered two pistols — one reported stolen — and a laser attachment. Daonte King, 18, who had an outstanding warrant, was charged. His mother, Shantese Skrine, was taken into custody on a felony warrant and also faces charges related to items found during the search.

Additional assistance in the operations was provided by the Swissvale Police Department, the Allegheny County Department of Juvenile Probation, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (Parole), and Pennsylvania State Police.

According to the attorney general’s office, enforcement efforts in Allegheny, Fayette, Somerset and Westmoreland counties so far in 2026 have resulted in the seizure of more than 50 firearms and numerous arrests.

The recent cases will be prosecuted by the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office. Officials noted that all charges are allegations and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
