Resident dies from injuries from house fire

One resident, 3 firefighters, and a firepolice officer injured

LEWISTOWN — One resident has died from injuries sustained during a Friday house fire at 212 E. Third St. in Lewistown according to Mifflin County Coroner Andrea Alcalde.

Alcalde also confirmed that another resident suffered injuries while City Hook & Ladder Capt. Ryan Bartlett confirmed that three firefighters and one firepolice officer suffered injuries from the fire.

At 1:14 p.m. Friday firefighters from Lewistown Fire Department (Heritage Fire Co. and City Hook & Ladder) were alerted to a house fire at 212 E. Third St. in Lewistown.

Upon arrival of Chief Logan Fire Co. Deputy Chief Cody Harsomchuck, he advised the 911 center this was a working house fire with victims on the porch roof.

Shortly after, the engine rescue from City Hook & Ladder and the ladder truck from Heritage Fire Co. arrived almost simultaneously and firefighters stretched ladders to the porch roof and a handline into the primary fire building of 210/212 E. Third St.

Firefighters and members of Lewistown Police Department were able to rescue two victims from the porch roof of 210/212 E Third St.

Firefighters spent the next hour and a half battling not only the fire in the buildings but the extreme cold temperatures as area temperatures continued to drop.

According to incident commander Capt. Ryan Bartlett, fire extended from 212 into 210 and later into 214/216 through a joined attic in that building.

Firefighters were pulled from the building at 210/212 early due to concerns for potential building collapse and rapid fire spread.

Firefighters were able to protect and save First United Methodist Church which sits adjacent to the property at 210 E. Third St.

Firefighters remained on scene well into the evening as a track hoe from Mike Watson’s Landscaping took down the structure of 210/212 E. Third St.

Firefighters cleared the scene around 7:30 p.m.

Several blocks around the scene were closed during the fire, including Valley Street from North Dorcas to Spruce Street, East Third Street from Valley Street to North Brown Street, and North Dorcas Street from North Market Street.

Assisting Lewistown Fire Department at the scene were Burnham Fire Co., Yeagertown Fire Co., Decatur Fire Co., Reedsville Fire Co., Milroy Fire Co., Junction Fire Co., Granville Fire Co, West Granville Fire Co., McVeytown Fire Co., Belleville Fire Co., Chief Logan Fire Co., Alpha Fire Co. (State College), FAME EMS, Milroy EMS, Lewistown borough police, Pennsylvania State Police, Lewistown borough road crew, UGI, the water authority, Supporting Our Heroes and local firepolice.

Barlett stated that the Red Cross had been contacted and a representative was reported to be on the way to the scene.
