Derry Township improved traffic lights with grant

LEWISTOWN — You may have noticed that the traffic lights at the Freedom Avenue/Logan Boulevard intersection in Burnham now have turning signals — as does the Ort Valley Road traffic light.

“In addition to these improvements, all the lights along the corridor from Ort Valley (Road)/Electric (Avenue) to Freedom Avenue/Logan Boulevard were updated with new technology to make the timing better,” said Derry Township Manager Kelly Shutes Monday at the board’s regular meeting.

This improvement was possible through Derry Township and Burnham Borough’s joint Automated Red Light Enforcement Grant, awarded in 2022 and costing neither municipality.

The Derry Township Board of Supervisors had to approve a $238,817.56 payment to M & B Services for these grant-funded signal improvements.

During the meeting, supervisors also heard from Carol High, of SEDA-COG, regarding subrecipient agreements for 2022, 2023, and 2024. These agreements use Community Development Block Grant funds to fund a street paving project in Yeagertown this spring.

Supervisors approved firefighter incentives totaling $16,000 for the Chief Logan Volunteer Fire Department and $10,250 for Yeagertown Volunteer Fire Co.

Chairman Ronald E. Napikoski Jr. said that the fire department and company have struggled to recruit volunteer firefighters.

So, supervisors opted to pay the fire department and the fire company an incentive. Napikoski added that the incentive is a good use of township dollars.

Supervisors also:

•Approved a purchase agreement with Lake Ford for a 2025 F-600 Dump Truck for $70,399.This dump truck will replace one that is more than 20 years old;

•Approved the second payment to SLC Excavating for the Mini Golf Rough Grading contract for $64,532.70;

•Approved a $100 donation to Pets Come First in Centre Hall.

Starting at $2.99/week.
