REEDSVILLE — Veterans from Mifflin County were joined at their monthly meeting Thursday, Nov. 20 by officers of the Burnham Eagles Club who presented the Mifflin County Veterans Organization with a $10,250 check.
The donation represents proceeds from a Nov. 15 fundraiser organized by the club and its members.
The Mifflin County Veterans Organization consists of veterans and spouses from every branch of the military both past and present. This group was started to give veterans a place to come together, to support each other and hear community updates meeting once a month.
The organization brings in guest speakers to share helpful tips and discounts for things they may need help accessing.
One of their long time members, Dan Bishop, was November’s guest speaker, going over what his organization, Peaceful Mind Veterans Adventures is all about.
Bishop formed Peaceful Minds Veteran Adventures to help veterans come together through comradery and therapeutic outdoor activities and help them deal with issues that they may be facing.
Bishop is a retired veteran who served 22 years in the military and wishes to give back to fellow veterans by inviting them all to take part in various activities.
What first started in 2020 with a coffee social has now grown to host coffee socials at multiple nursing homes, he said.
Bishop then shared his love of fishing and he raised enough funds in 2023 that he was able to organize two separate fishing charters at Raystown.
Last year the group was able to hand out 168 Christmas care packages in Mifflin and Juniata County nursing homes and they are gearing up for another year but could use the community’s help.
Anyone interested in donating to Peaceful Minds can do so at 14 Church Lane Reedsville.
