Mount Union camp to host first-ever festival

MOUNT UNION — The PA Lions Beacon Lodge Camp in Mount Union is relatively quiet these days, slumbering after a long summer where the camp was alive with laughter, learning and adventure.

Youth and adults with diverse disabilities came together to enjoy camping experiences designed to celebrate their unique abilities and foster personal growth.

With the change of seasons to fall, Beacon Lodge transforms into a haven for gatherings of all kinds. One such gathering will make its appearance for the first time at the Huntingdon County facility.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, the Beacon Lodge Camp, located at 114 Route 103 South, Mount Union, welcomes long-time supporters and first-time visitors alike to its first-ever Beacon Fall Fest.

“We wanted to do something that would bring awareness of the camp to the overall community, and bring people out to see the camp,” explained Daniel Coons, community outreach coordinator for Beacon Lodge Camp.

While Beacon Lodge offers specialized camps for adults, youth and veterans with disabilities, focusing on independence, personal growth, and social skills, they also offer camp rentals during their offseason — September through May — to non-profits, organizations and the public.

The Fall Fest will provide an opportunity for the camp to highlight some of those outdoor amenities, including outdoor bowling, mini golf, pony rides, golf cart tours of the campgrounds and fall-themed games.

“We’re still making it a fun, interactive thing with the community as well,” Coons added. “And showing them what is here, with the amenities of the camp, with our outdoor bowling alley and mini golf course.”

The festival also features face painting, live music with a deejay, delicious food, variety of crafts and vendors and raffles and prizes.
