EDWARDSVILLE -- The Juniata College Eagles came off their bye week and struggled mightily in a 38-7 Landmark Conference setback at Wilkes University on Saturday.
Trailing 7-0 early, Juniata (2-6, 0-4 Landmark Conference) tied the game when Alex Eaton capped an 11-play, 74-yard run with a 7-yard touchdown scamper with 6:26 remaining in the first quarter.
That would be the only points the Eagles would muster. The Colonels responded with a 23-yard Nick Volpone field goal and added a 1-yard Ben Contella TD run in the second quarter.
Wilkes (5-3, 3-1 LC) extended its lead to 24-7 in the third quarter as Cooper King rushed into the end zone from 1-yard out at the 10:33 mark of the third quarter. Fourth-quarter TD scores from King -- 17-yards out -- and Justin Moore -- the recipient of a 20-yard pass from King -- set the final.
Juniata QB Ethan Eisenberg went 18 of 37 for 132 yards, while King finished 16 of 30 for 188 yards with 1 TD and 1 int. On the ground, Juniata's Ivan Foreman rushed for 89 yards and Wilkes had Daniel Pigga (111 yards and 1 TD) and King (106 yards and 2 TDs) each top the century mark. The Colonels dominated with their ground game, rushing for 353 yards on the day.
Juniata High School standout Makih Hunt played in the contest and had 1 catch for 11 yards for the Eagles as did Midd-West's Carter Sauer, who started on the offensive line. Mount Union's Naiym Franus and Midd-West's Parker Boop did not play.
