Supervisors discuss bike use at Kish Park

Woodland Avenue lot consolidated

LEWISTOWN — Derry Township Supervisors discussed complaints regarding the use of electric bikes at Kish Park during the board’s meeting Monday.

Kelly Shutes, township manager, told supervisors that residents have been complaining that they are being forced off the path at Kish Park due to electric bike riders.

“Some of these bikes can go up to 40-miles per hour,” noted John Sipe, supervisor, inferring that the bikes can be a danger to park goers.

Supervisor Ronald Napikoski Jr. explained that electric bikes, as well as bicycles, are currently not to be ridden at Kish Park, noting that the path isn’t wide enough.

While the township is researching a grant to widen the path, allowing for bicycles, electric bikes would still not be permitted at the park.

In new business, supervisors approved a lot consolidation of 545 and 547 Woodland Avenue which once had a conjoined house that was recently demolished by the township.

“Due to current zoning restrictions, it would be very difficult to rebuild a home on the existing small parcels,” noted Shutes.

The township will consolidate the separate parcels into one larger parcel that will go out for bid.

The consolidation will prevent someone from purchasing a parcel that would be difficult to build on.

“Even with the lot consolidation, a variance may need to be granted by the Zoning Hearing Board to build a home on it,” added Shutes.

In other news, supervisors approved two park use applications, one for Shining Light Through Darkness event to be held November 2025 through Jan. 15, 2026, as well as allowing the Geisinger Walk in Park Arthritis Awareness event to take place on May 2, 2026.

Shutes announced that the mini golf engineer will be on scene Thursday for a reconstruction meeting to look over the area at Kish Park.

Starting at $2.99/week.
