Fall festivals fill weekend slate of activities

THOMPSONTOWN — Not sure if fall has truly set in yet? Well, there are some obvious signs, including fallen, multi-colored leaves; cooler temperatures; and shorter daylight.
And, the number of times you will read fall and festival in this story. So keep reading to learn about things to do this weekend.
Apple Fest
Locust Run Church, located at 25 Locust Run Road, Thompsontown, hosts its annual Apple Fest from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. There will be a variety of vendors, craft and flea market, mums, pumpkins, gourds and more. Fresh apple cider will be made on site and be available for sale, with a limit of one gallon per family. Other highlights include: free lunch of hot dogs and chili; and an apple pie contest. The winning pie and other baked goods will be available for a donation. Proceeds benefit church mission. Reeds Gap State Park Fall Festival

Reeds Gap State Park, New Lancaster Valley Road in Milroy, provides the perfect backdrop for its annual Fall Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. There will be plenty of activities for the whole family with bluegrass music performed by the Brush Mountain Band, live falcons with Falconry display by the Falconry Girl, woodturning demonstrations by Nittany Valley Woodturners and look for an appearance from Smokey Bear. Hands-on activities include pumpkin painting, candle-dipping and more. Enjoy seasonal treats like fresh apple cider and handmade ice cream, or take a hayride through the park to view the start of fall foliage.
Halloween dance at Decatur Firehouse
Bring your dancing shoes as the Fighting Against Cancer as a Community: The Halloween Dance will be held at the Decatur Firehouse Cookhouse, 4277 Route 522, Lewistown, is scheduled for Saturday, from 5 to 9 p.m. Besides dancing, there will be a costume contest, raffles and food. The costume contest will be divided into the following groups: baby through prekindergarten: cutest; kindergarten through sixth grade: silliest; seventh through 10th Grade: weirdest; 11 and 12th grade: scariest; adults age 18 plus: most creative; and seniors age 65 up: funniest. Prizes for the top three places in each category. The cost is $3 per person for ages 6 and up. Ages 5 and under get in for free. Food and drinks are free.
Juniata County Crop 5K Hunger Walk/Run
The 53rd Annual Juniata County Crop 5K Hunger Walk/Run is slated for Sunday, with registration beginning at 1:30 p.m. and the walk starting at 2 p.m. at Walker Township Park in Mifflintown. The Crop Hunger Walk benefits Hunger Ministries globally through CWS and locally Meals on Wheels and the Juniata County Food Pantry. The Juniata County Business and Professional Women along with the Juniata County Dairy Promotion Committee will provide refreshments. Anyone raising $125 will receive a free CROP Walk t-shirt. Free movie night: ‘Heaven’s Door’
Join the Reedsville United Methodist Church, 82 E. Logan St., Reedsville, on Sunday for a free movie night from 6:30 to 9 p.m. for a showing of “Heaven’s Door.” Riley, a young girl in a small town, makes an unexpected discovery – a doorway to heaven, which leads to miraculous healing powers. She hides her gift at first as her parents struggle with a separation, and her mother continues to lose her faith. Riley is soon faced with the ultimate sacrifice … will it change her mother’s mind and bring the family back together?
Refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Annual fire safety event
Lowe’s in Lewistown will hold its annual Fire Safety Event on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Check out an exciting display of local fire apparatus and meet the heroes who keep our community safe. There will be food vendors on-site, raffle with great prizes and plenty of giveaways for kids. Plus, there will be a face painting area where children can have fun and learn about fire safety.
