Quirky ‘A Goosemas Story’ is worth flocking to on Friday

LEWISTOWN — Buffie Boyer worked as a professional photographer for years, so it only stands to reason that at least one Goose Day promotion is picturesque.
Since 2020, Boyer, who works for the Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau, has been coming up with fun photo shoot ideas to help promote Goose Day.
“People love coming to get their photo taken each year,” Boyer explained. “Since Goose Day is a quirky holiday, we make the photo op fun and quirky, too,” Boyer added. “I usually hear giggles when people first approach the photo area.”
Starting Friday through Monday, the region will be bursting with traditions old and new, proving once again why this one-of-a-kind holiday is worth flocking to.
The very first photo shoot was held at the fountain at the Five Points, which resembles the fountain in the beginning of the hit TV show “Friends.”
The next year, the theme was recreating the cover of The Beatles’ “Abbey Road” album in 2021. That was followed by Top Goose for the movie “Top Gun” in 2022, then Goose Lightning for the movie “Grease” in 2023.
Last year, people weren’t sure who to call as “Ghostbusters” became Goosebusters.
“So, this year we decided that a spoof on the classic ‘A Christmas Story’ would be fun but called ‘A Goosemas Story,'” Boyer said. “We have a five-foot-tall goose mascot in our office that we dress up each year for the photo op.
“This year, Mrs. Goose is wearing the pink bunny costume and holding a Red Ryder BB gun,” Boyer added. “We also included a Christmas tree, a “Fragile” box and instead of a human leg lamp, we have goose leg lamps as props to hold.”
The Goose Day photo op debuted at First Friday to get the buzz going for this year’s holiday and gives the visitors bureau some early photos for promotion as well. The photo op is also set up in their lobby throughout the month of September.
On Lucky Friday – from 5 to 9 p.m. this Friday – it will be set up in front of the Miller Cinemas in downtown Lewistown for the photo. Then it goes back to the lobby for the weekend and Monday for Goose Day.
Taking a photo with Mrs. Goose is free, and all visitors get a sticker for participating.
“The photo is just a fun way of commemorating the holiday, and I hope that everyone shares their photo on social media to help spread awareness of Goose Day,” Boyer said.
She is also letting the cat, er, goose, out of the bag for 2026. She assures those involved that it won’t ruffle any feathers. “We already have next year’s planned for America 250,” Boyer added. “It will be Goose Washington.”
