LEWISTOWN — The Juniata River Valley Chamber of Commerce launched its Leadership Institute Class of 2025-26 Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Birch Hill Event Center. This year’s program brings together 17 participants from a diverse mix of businesses and nonprofit organizations across the region.

The theme for this year’s class, “Climb the Summit: Leading with Vision,” set the tone for an inspiring and symbolic kick-off. The event space reflected the mountain-climbing motif, designed to emphasize leadership as a journey of challenge, teamwork, and growth.

“Training our future leaders is one of the most important things we can do for our community,” said Rhonda Kelley, Executive Director of the Chamber, who opened the program. In her remarks, Kelley encouraged the class to keep their eyes on the summit as they move through the program:

“Just as you must push yourself to keep climbing when hiking, you may face challenges during this program–some that may stretch you beyond your comfort zone. But, like hiking, you must stay the course, lean on one another, and offer support along the way. Then you will emerge stronger, more confident, and more prepared to lead.”

The kick-off also featured Cher Harpster, Penn State Extension Educator, Leadership and Community Vitality Team, and Peter Ort, Chief Operating Officer at MCS Bank, who spoke on the importance of connection before content, as well as company culture and leadership.

In addition to networking and learning, participants began planning their community projects, which are a hallmark of the Leadership Institute experience.

Over the coming months, the class will take part in seven intensive educational sessions covering topics critical to community and leadership development, including:

• History & Heritage

• Community, Economic Development & Entrepreneurism

• Healthcare & Human Services

• Community Nonprofits

• Law & Government

• Education & Workforce Development

• Tourism, Arts & Culture

The Chamber’s Leadership Institute has a long tradition of preparing emerging leaders to serve and strengthen the Juniata River Valley. By investing in leadership training today, the Chamber ensures a brighter, more resilient future for tomorrow.
