One dead, two injured in early morning crash

MIFFLIN — A Sunbury man succumbed to his injuries Tuesday as the result of a deadly motor vehicle crash at the intersection of state Route 35 South and Mowery Street.

Manuel Vazquez Perez, 30, a back-seat passenger, was flown to a medical helicopter landing zone at the Mifflintown Airport where he was pronounced deceased by the Mifflin County Coroner.

Pennsylvania State Police at Lewistown responded to the crash at about 5 a.m. when they said Roberto Cruz Toledo, 30, of Sunbury, was driving a 2007 Chevy Express north on State Route 35 south when he failed to negotiate a right-hand turn.

Mifflintown Hose Co. said roads were shut down for about five hours, reopening at about 10:13 a.m.

Police said the vehicle traveled into the southbound lane, struck a curb, and proceeded to travel over the curb and sidewalk. The vehicle continued across the intersection with Mowery Street and struck another curb and then a guide rail.

Toledo is believed to have sustained minor injuries while passenger Juan Lopez Garcia, 28, of Sunbury, was not injured while Esteban Gomez Perez, 30, also of Sunbury sustained serious injuries and was transported by Fayette Township EMS to Geisinger-Medical Hospital for treatment.

Police said no occupants of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts at the time of impact.
