Father’s Day and Fishing top weekend activity slate

LEWISTOWN — Whether you’re looking for something special to do on Father’s Day for dear old Dad, or just want to head outdoors with sultry summer weather on its way, there are plenty of activities this weekend to fill your slate.

From a fishing tournament at Kish Park to family fishing at Whipple Dam State Park and Reedsville Community Day to a variety of dinner and auctions, craft and vendor events and the Evendale Festival, there’s something out there for Dad or anyone else that you want to spend some quality time with.

• Youth Trout Fishing Tournament at Kishacoquillas Park in Lewistown, 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, ages 14 and under are welcome to register starting at 7 a.m. for fishing at the newly-renovated pond for fun and prizes. Fishing begins at 8 a.m. Registration required to fish and be eligible to win prizes.

• Flag Football Tournament, 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Walker Park, Mifflintown, hosted by Mifflintown Family Worship Center. Teams must be there at 9:30 a.m. Cost is $10 per person. Proceeds donated to family of beloved Juniata High School graduate Yaniel “GG” J. Ortiz-Maldonado, who died in tragic motorcycle accident.

• Robin Deavor Heidler Porch Memorial Ride, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, 27335 Route 75 North, Mifflintown. Registration is at 9 a.m. at Rutter’s in Mifflintown, with kickstands up at 10 a.m. The cost is $25 for each rider and driver and $5 for each passenger. All street legal vehicles are welcome. All participants must sign a waiver. Robin sadly passed away on May 29. Proceeds will be given to Robin’s family to help ease their financial stress and final expenses.

• Family Fishing at Whipple Dam State Park, 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, 3746 Laurel Run Road, Petersburg. Join the park staff for a morning of fishing. Poles and bait provided. No fishing license is required during this program. Meet at the fishing pier.

• Guided Hike at Greenwood Furnace State Park, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, 15795 Greenwood Road, Huntingdon. Trails will vary depending on group preference. Bring snacks, water and hiking shoes. Meet at park office.

The Mifflin County Airport will host a fly-in, drive-in, walk-in breakfast on Saturday.

• Ranger Walk at Greenwood Furnace State Park, 3 to 5 p.m. Saturdays through July 19, 15795 Greenwood Road, Huntingdon. Explore Greenwood Furnace State Park through the eyes of a park ranger. Join Ranger Louie at the park’s beach area for a leisurely nature walk near the lake, talking about topics like animals, plants and fungi.

• Historical Walking Tour at Greenwood Furnace State Park, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sundays through June 13, 15795 Greenwood Road, Huntingdon. Join park staff for a walk through the historic district. Learn about the village that dominated the area for 70 years. Meet at the Blacksmith Shop.

Yard and bake sale in McAlisterville, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Bunkertown Brethren Church, 52 Bunkertown Road, McAlisterville. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.

Seafood and chicken dinner and auction, 3:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, Lost Creek Community Park, 137 School St., McAlisterville. Takeout starts at 3:30 p.m., with the buffet dinner at 4 p.m. and the auction at 5 p.m. Proceeds benefit two area residents in need.

Friday the 13th Car Hop, 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Lack-Tuscarora EMS, 9320 Route 75, East Waterford, sponsored by the junior members. Old-fashioned car hop features members coming to your car, taking your order and delivering food to you while you sit and listen to retro music over the sound system. Menu includes burgers, hotdogs, fries, chicken nuggets, chili, milkshakes, soda and water.

Reedsville Community Day, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Come out and find a new treasure at the town-wide yard sale.

34th Annual Evendale Festival, 3237 Middle Road, Richfield, will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday. The festival features a tractor rodeo and show as well as food stands, cornhole tournament, pie contest, kids games, auction and live music by Broken Record Band.

Then and Now Kish Park Tour

The Mifflin County Historical Society presents the Then and Now Kish Park Tour on Saturday, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. A fundraising event for the historical society, the tour includes: history of the land and the park by historian Paul Fagley, author of “Memories of Kishacoquillas Park book;” inside stories from Dee Miller, daughter of the amusement park owners; short walking tour of the remnants of the amusement park that closed in 1972; and Twin Kiss milkshake provided at the park. Advance tickets cost $30 person, or two-ticket special for $50 includes two tour tickets, a free copy of Fagley’s book or a Forest Fisher bobblehead, two milkshakes and double the donation to the mini golf course project. Father’s Day Cruise In, noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Locust Grove Retirement Village, 69 Cottage Road, Mifflin. Vendors, food trucks, raffles and music, along with new and old cars, motorcycles and trucks. Proceeds benefit the activities department. Rain date is June 22.

Artisan Alley Day Craft and Vendor Event, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Chief Logan Volunteer Fire Department, 1800 Glenwood Ave., Lewistown. Come out and shop local while also supporting the fire department.
