Program designed to teach ladies valuble outdoor skills

Volunteer instructors sought for May 3 event

NEWPORT — If you’re a woman who’s not quite sure you’re not quite wild enough for the outdoors, Mindy Wilt might be able to help.

Wilt, an environmental education specialist at Little Buffalo State Park in Newport, is seeking volunteers and attendees for the park’s Fourth Annual Women in the Wild program.

“If you have a skill or hobby that you would like to share or teach at this event, please reach out to us,” Wilt explained.

“First started in the Pennsylvania Wilds, this state park program has gained popularity across the state and we are now in our fourth year of hosting this event at Little Buffalo,” Wilt added.

Women in the Wild is designed to help women step out of their comfort zone and learn new outdoor skills in a fun field day-type format at the one-day event.

Participants can choose from four programs held throughout the day at the park, located at 1579 State Park Road, Newport, on Saturday, May 3. Program times are 9 to 10:15 a.m., 10:30 to 11:45 a.m., 1 to 2:15 p.m. and 2:30 to 3:45 p.m.

Wilt said the event is a fundraiser for our Historic Train Car renovation project as well as our ADA Accessible Playground project. The cost of the event also covers the meal and materials that instructors purchase for activities at the event. Women who are at least 12 years and older are welcome to attend.

Pre-registration is required, and actual registration will open later this winter.

“Our campground is set to be open for the beginning of May for those who might be traveling a distance,” Wilt said. “Overnights are not included in your registration. Activities will include a mix of environmental art, wellness, outdoor recreation, and wildlife education.”
