SHIPPENSBURG — Saturday marked perhaps one of the best days at the PIAA track and field championships in history for Juniata Valley athletes as competitors from Mifflin County, Juniata and Greenwood combined for four gold medals, a silver medal and a bronze at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium.

Mifflin County’s Skylar Ciccolini defended her gold in the javelin with a toss of 169 feet, 3 inches, while her sister Taylor grabbed her first state medal, a bronze, with a throw of 139-8 inches at the 2019 championships.

Skylar graduates having unleashed the second-best throw in the javelin by a high school girl in the nation’s history with a throw of 184-2 inches at the Penn Relays earlier this season. She is the second two-time gold medalist in the event in county history, following in the footsteps of Indian Valley graduate Laura Loht.

Chayce Macknair had the other medal for Mifflin County, a silver, with a valiant performance in the 3,200-meter run that ended with a huge lifetime best of 9:07.88.

Juniata’s Garrett Baublitz was superb in his events as well, claiming two gold medals within hours of each other. Baublitz reached personal bests in both the 1,600-meter run (4:11.54) and the 800-meter run (1:53.96), using a strong push in the 800 to grab his second medal.

Greenwood was represented well by Mallory Kauffman, who won gold in the shot put with a throw of 48-3 3/4, her second gold in the meet. She also won the discus the day before.

Overall, 12 area athletes competed on Day 2 of the PIAA championships, winning nine medals in their respective events. Complete coverage of the meet begins on Page B1.
