USDA to survey farm chemical use, production costs

Pa. wheat production up, oats down, record high yield for barley

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania winter wheat production totaled 17.5 million bushels in 2023, up 14% from the 2022 total of 15.3 million bushels, according to King Whetstone, director of the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Northeastern Regional Field Office. Area harvested for grain totaled 230 thousand acres, up 10% from the previous year. Yield was estimated at 76.0 bushels per acre, up 3.0 bushels from the previous year yield of 73.0 bushels per acre. ‘PA Pumpkin Palooza: Where Gourds Go Glam!’ contest announced

HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and PA Preferred have announced the “PA Pumpkin Palooza: Where Gourds Go Glam!” contest. Pennsylvanians are encouraged to get out to their local farm to find pumpkins to use as canvases during the autumn season. Artists are invited to use their painting or carvings skills to showcase their PA Pumpkins. MIDDLEBURG — Any Snyder County farmer interested in having necessary plans to follow PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) regulations can apply with the Snyder County Conservation District (SCCD) to help pay for development or update of a manure management plan (MMP), nutrient management plan (NMP), agricultural erosion and sedimentation (Ag.
