HARRISBURG -- Pennsylvania winter wheat production totaled 17.5 million bushels in 2023, up 14% from the 2022 total of 15.3 million bushels, according to King Whetstone, director of the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Northeastern Regional Field Office. Area harvested for grain totaled 230 thousand acres, up 10% from the previous year. Yield was estimated at 76.0 bushels per acre, up 3.0 bushels from the previous year yield of 73.0 bushels per acre.
Oat production was estimated at 2.87 million bushels, down 20% from 2022. Yield was estimated at 61.0 bushels per acre, up 2.0 bushels from the previous year. Harvested area, at 47 thousand acres, was 23% below last year.
Barley production was estimated at 2.27 million bushels, up 69% from the 2022 total of 1.34 million bushels. The average yield, at a record high 81.0 bushels per acre, was up 14.0 bushels from the previous year. Producers seeded 47 thousand acres in 2023, up 15% from 2022. Harvested area, at 28 thousand acres, was up 40% from 2022.
