Waterways guide updated for 2023
Guide features fishing, local businesses and lodging locations
LEWISTOWN – The “Waterways of the Juniata River Valley” guide, a popular and practical guide that covers the Juniata River and its tributaries in Mifflin and Juniata Counties, has now been updated and reprinted since its initial release in 2021.
“This guide is designed for anyone and everyone with an interest in the Juniata River Valley’s waterways from experienced fishermen or kayakers or to those planning their first trip,” Jenny Landis, executive director of the Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau, said. “Since 2021, we have distributed nearly 12,000 copies of the guide so we know there is interest in coming to our area.”
The Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau created the guide to promote the area’s natural landscape while boosting local businesses like tack shops, fishing guides, boat builders, and lodging locations.
The 20-page directory is chock-full of fishing information thanks to local fishermen, Joshua Hill, Nick Lyter, and Brian Shumaker. The Juniata River and our major streams in both Mifflin and Juniata counties are featured with descriptions of each stream’s characteristics, access points, tips on best times to fish, and best bait and tackle to use. In addition, rules and regulations, and fishing license locations are included.
For others who simply want to float down the river, the guide promotes the calm, gentle waters of the Juniata River as the perfect place for paddlers and directs visitors to places to rent kayaks and tubes.
Once travelers are here, the visitors bureau encourages them to stay overnight at one of the many lodging locations listed in the directory including campgrounds along the river, cabins near streams and creeks, and national hotel chains.
Several small local businesses, including a few new ones, who offer guide services, fishing and boating supplies, kayak rentals, riverside camping, or lodging, are featured throughout the booklet.
The waterways guide will be placed around the state at all Pennsylvania Welcome Centers and many travel plazas along interstates and the turnpike.
