Letters to the Editor

Our nation’s founders established US as a republic To the Editor: In a recent editorial post, it was declared that our nation was founded as both a democracy and a republic. That is a fabrication that would demean the founder’s intent for our country. Never, and I mean never, was our government to be a shared consort. Never, and I mean never, was democracy mentioned in either the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution of this nation. It was established, and clearly stated, that this nation was to be a Republic. I believe only the ignorant would deny that. Many of the ...

Support for rape crisis centers can create change

Editorials

Rape crisis centers in Pennsylvania will see state funding double under the budget signed last month. These agencies provide services to victims of sexual assault. Pittsburgh Action Against Rape was one of the first in the state and one of the first in the country. It has been a refuge and a helping hand for victims for more than 50 years. It is one of 47 rape crisis centers in Pennsylvania. In 2025, the state budgeted $12 million for them. That can sound like a lot of money until you cut it into 47 pieces and expect it to stretch like a too-small blanket to cover women, men and ...

Naked dressing: from Studio 54 to the bridal procession

Editorials

Brides should know that they already have a man. They don't have to use their wedding to attract a date for Saturday night. They've supposedly secured one for the foreseeable future. Thus, it's hard to figure how the fashion trend of "naked dressing," lamentable even at nightclubs, has invaded the precincts of ancient social custom. Displaying one's privates — or underwear — in public started as a fashion trend pushed by attention-hungry celebrities. Now it's walking down the aisle. The traditional bridal dress is white for its association with purity, innocence and, yes, ...

DSA stands for freeloaders — hold onto your wallets

Editorials

New Yorkers, hold onto your wallets, and brace yourselves for financial chaos. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's minions, also known as the Democratic Socialists of America, are preparing to radicalize the state Legislature when they take their newly won seats in Albany at the end of the year. How crazy will it get? One warning sign appeared on Friday, when Brian Romero, a DSA member endorsed by Mamdani, put up a GoFundMe page to raise money for his own rent and food expenses until January, when he'll get sworn in as the assemblymember representing East Elmhurst, Jackson ...

Rodgers drops bomb on Fauci, 'absolute coward'

Editorials

Future Football Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers is preparing for his last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, so he was flippant in a recent interview with his pal Pat McAfee at ESPN. When asked about his mindset during his final year, Rodgers wisecracked: "I'm going to plead the Fifth. Like that absolute coward Tony Fauci." Rodgers, along with other famous athletes like tennis star Novak Djokovic, decided against getting the COVID vaccine, and professed that he wasn't going to worry about a "cancel-culture casket." He fudged an answer that he was "inoculated," giving the false ...

The road to Branson wasn’t traveled alone

Editorials

The Mifflin County Babe Ruth 15-16-year-old All-Stars left Monday for the Babe Ruth World Series in Branson, Missouri, carrying something more than their baseball equipment. They’ll carry a county with them. That may sound like a lot to place on 15- and 16-year-old baseball players, but it comes with earning a place on a stage this big. Nobody handed these players a trip to Missouri. They earned it on the field. They gave Mifflin County another reason to be proud. Mifflin County opens pool play Friday, Aug. 7, against Fort Myers, Florida, then faces the United Kingdom, Arizona and ...
