The Mifflin County Babe Ruth 15-16-year-old All-Stars left Monday for the Babe Ruth World Series in Branson, Missouri, carrying something more than their baseball equipment.
They'll carry a county with them.
That may sound like a lot to place on 15- and 16-year-old baseball players, but it comes with earning a place on a stage this big. Nobody handed these players a trip to Missouri. They earned it on the field. They gave Mifflin County another reason to be proud.
Mifflin County opens pool play Friday, Aug. 7, against Fort Myers, Florida, then faces the United Kingdom, Arizona and Colombia. The tournament includes 20 teams divided into four pools of five. After pool play, teams move into either the championship bracket or a bracket that determines fifth place.
The competition will be demanding. So will the trip.
Getting a team of teenagers, coaches, families, and equipment from central Pennsylvania to Missouri doesn't happen because somebody wishes it would. It happens because people step forward. Businesses contribute money, and residents give what they can. It happens because this community understands that players may remember a trip like this for the rest of their lives.
Those efforts deserve a thank-you.
Every business that contributed and every person who supported a fundraiser helped send these players to the World Series. Their support kept costs from ending this opportunity at the county line and turned a team achievement into a community achievement.
That matters.
A team like this reminds us what youth sports can do. They give young players structure and teach them how to handle winning and losing. They also demand commitment to teammates and something larger than individual success.
Sometimes the right group gives an entire county something to rally around.
This Mifflin County team has already done that.
The All-Stars earned their trip by scoring 40 runs in five regional games and batting .355 as a team.
Those numbers tell only part of the story.
They don't show the nerves before a big inning or the parent pacing behind the fence. They can't measure the hours of practice and the unseen work completed before anybody keeps score.
Most of all, they don't show what this trip means to Mifflin County.
Mifflin County knows Babe Ruth baseball, and its World Series history runs deep. The county has never finished below seventh in six previous World Series appearances. The 2016 13-year-old team won a national title. The 2018 and 2021 15-year-old teams finished as national runners-up.
That tradition has been built over decades.
Players, coaches, league volunteers, and families have built it by showing up year after year. They maintain the fields, raise money, and make sure local kids have a place to play.
The 2026 team now gets its turn.
No matter what happens in Branson, these players have already earned the county's respect. They've represented Mifflin County well and given younger players something to chase. They've also reminded longtime fans why youth baseball still matters here.
They aren't going to Missouri for a vacation. They're going to compete and try to win, as they should.
But these players should also take time to understand what they've accomplished. Few young athletes get to represent their hometown at a World Series. Fewer still get to do it with so many people back home following every inning and waiting for every result.
They should know their county is proud of them before the first pitch is thrown.
The players also should look around before they leave and recognize how many people helped make the trip possible. The businesses and residents who contributed weren't buying hits or victories. They were investing in an experience these teenagers earned through their work.
That support says something good about Mifflin County.
People here understand what it means when local kids achieve something special. They understand that opportunities have costs and that families shouldn't have to carry every one of them alone. When the call went out for help, the community answered.
Congratulations to the Mifflin County Babe Ruth 15-16-year-old All-Stars and to the coaches and families who helped them reach this stage. Thank you, too, to every business, donor, and volunteer who made the trip possible.
A World Series trip belongs to the team that earns it.
This one belongs to Mifflin County, too.
