10 vie for Cissy York scholarship awards

MIFFLINTOWN — The Juniata County Veterans Council has announced 10 veterans queen candidates who will vie for the $2,000 Cissy York Scholarship Award. A $1,000 prize will be awarded to the second runner-up.

The candidates from Juniata High School are:

¯Emily Knepp, of Thompsontown, daughter of Dawn Bonsell and Jim Knepp. Her sponsor is Earl Stitt, and she plans to become an elementary school teacher.

¯Gabrielle M. Stong, of Thompsontown, daughter of Eva M. and Joseph L. Weyrich IV. Her sponsor is Gerald Walton Jr., and she plans to earn a bachelor of science degree in physical therapy at Lock Haven University.

¯Halee Decker, of Port Royal, daughter of Bryce, Carl and Lydia Decker. Her sponsor is Carl Decker, and she plans to attend college to study marine biology.

Gabrielle M. Stong

¯Jasmine Reeder, of Mifflintown, daughter of Selena Detra. Her sponsor is William Baum, and she plans to earn a degree as a registered nurse.

¯Jayden Harlon, of Port Royal, daughter of Richard and Kelly Harlon. Her sponsor is Richard Harlon, and she plans to earn a college degree in political science.

¯Madison Rheam, of Mifflintown, daughter of Charlie and Tammy Rheam. Her sponsor is Mike Heister, and she plans to attend Penn College to study nursing.

¯Natalie Imes, of Mifflin, daughter of Richard and Donna Imes. Her sponsor is Ashley Bailor, and she plans to attend a four-year college.

¯Shae Madison Smith, of Mifflintown, daughter of Desiree Rhea and Donald R. Smith. Her sponsor is Sam Goshorn, and she plans to attend Harrisburg Area Community College to study nursing.

Halee Decker

¯Yanelys Teresa Melara Ramirez, of Mifflintown, daughter of Jose R. Melara and Alicia Ramirez. Her sponsor is Jerry Houtz, and she plans to attend the Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology to become a licensed practical nurse.

The candidate from East Juniata High School is:

¯Jordyn Arnold, of Liverpool, daughter of Ryan and Terry Arnold. Her sponsor is A. Coder and she plans to study early childhood education at Susquehanna University.

Candidates will sell raffle tickets as part of the competition.

The annual Veterans Council Queen’s Ball will be held Nov. 10 at the CJEMS building in Mifflintown.

The annual Veterans Day parade will be held on Nov. 11 in Thompsontown.
