All Stars invade midstate; Port Royal is tonight

Tony Stewart’s All Star Circuit of Champions sprint cars are in Pennsylvania this weekend. Three races are planned. Action began last night at Williams Grove Speedway and will shift to Port Royal Speedway tonight. The traveling group will compete in the 30-lap Keith Kauffman Classic A-main, which pays the winner $5,000. Super late models also are on the card in a 25-lap challenge series event. NASCAR’s off, but the local tracks are running

NASCAR is idle this weekend due to the Easter holiday. Locally, most area speedways are in action. Port Royal Speedway presents 410 sprint cars, late models and econo lates. The first 200 youth entering the grounds receive a free Easter treat. Kids can scramble for Easter eggs in the speedway infield prior to the start of racing. Tracks look to run this weekend

Area auto racing is officially in full swing. Three nights of action are on tap this weekend, weather permitting. Port Royal Speedway will attempt to continue the blistering pace that earned the track the nickname “ the speed palace.” Track records fell last week in the 410 and 305 sprint car classes plus the late models. Last week, Doug Esh outran Greg Hodnett to earn his first Port Royal sprint car win of the season. Racing season got underway last weekend at Williams Grove and Port Royal speedways. Greg Hodnett wasted no time placing his name in the 2017 winners list at the grove. Australian Lynton Jeffrey survived a late race challenge from Dale Blaney to collect his first sprint car win at Port Royal. 32 super late models traveled to the Juniata County oval. Jason Covert mounted a final turn charge to outrun Kenny Moreland to the checkered flag. Covert’s margin of victory was a scant .182 seconds. What a difference one week can make. Snow left the region quickly and area speedways plan to operate tonight. Port Royal Speedway’s operating schedule starts when gates open this afternoon at 2. Hot laps begin at 4:30 with opening ceremonies at 5. The 410 sprint cars are joined by super and limited late models. Super late model drivers compete for a top prize of $3,500. The race winner is a guaranteed starter in the Appalachian Mountain Late Model Speedway race at Port Royal in June. Green flag as local tracks open

The 2017 racing season is underway in central Pennsylvania. Lincoln Speedway survived a four-hour rain delay last Saturday to complete its Icebreaker opener. While it didn’t feel like ice, the temperature dropped 20 degrees during the day. Danny Dietrich won the main event, in which 27 sprint cars signed in. The Adams County oval is back in action today at 2 p.m. The rain date is Sunday.
