Outlaws to Port in final Pa. appearance of year

The World of Outlaws make their final appearance of the year in Pennsylvania at Port Royal Speedway tonight. As many as 50 sprint cars are expected to compete for a $10,000 top prize. The main event is 30 laps. Lance Dewease has won six races this year at the Juniata County oval. That’s impressive, especially since Dewease didn’t race weekly anywhere this season. Brock Zearfoss, the 2017 track champion, scored four wins at Port Royal plus a victory against the Outlaws at Williams Grove in July. Greg Hodnett and Lucas Wolfe, who finished second in this race to Logan Schuchart last ...

Hodnett, Dewease are Open favorites

The final night of the three-day National Open racing program is set for tonight at Williams Grove Speedway. The World of Outlaws sanction the event, which concludes with a 40-lap A-main worth $50,000 to the winner. The night wraps up the season-long points battle. The action begins at 6:30 p.m. Who is the PA Posse driver favored to win the prestigious event? Greg Hodnett won last Friday night’s Outlaw tuneup event at the Grove. The hottest driver in the midstate currently is Lance Dewease, who won the Tuscarora 50 at Port Royal Speedway two weeks ago. Dewease also swept Friday night ...

Column: It’s time to start being honest when it comes sports

This is always an interesting time of year for me because I’m finished covering the Altoona Curve and now turn my focus pretty much solely on Penn State football for the next few months. I’m one of the few full-time baseball beat writers around who also covers a major college or pro football team on a daily basis. That’s not common in this industry because there’s so much overlap between baseball and football at various points of the year that most media outlets separate the two beats. Because I cover the two sports on an everyday basis, it’s become so clear over time just ...

Selinsgrove closes out with 35th National Open

Selinsgrove Speedway takes center stage tonight as late season racing continues. The Snyder County oval closes the 2017 season with the 35th annual Jim Nace Memorial National Open. Lucas Wolfe is the defending race champion. The 30-lap feature pays the winner $8,000. Starting the event is worth $500. The All Star Circuit of Champions sanctions the program for the first time since 1991. Picking a favorite for tonight may be difficult as most All Star regulars are not familiar with the track. That should give the advantage to the PA Posse. Retired driver Fred Rahmer is the only ...

Eyes of sprint car world are on Port Royal tonight

The eyes of the sprint car world are upon Port Royal Speedway tonight. Port Royal Speedway celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Tuscarora 50 which began in 1968. Over the years the Tuscarora 50 has meant many things to the racers, fans and speedway. Racers compete in the longest Port Royal sprint car race of the season. The best competition is on hand and a win is on many racers’ bucket list of victories they seek. When ones name is added to that list, the driver enters an elite group having won one of central PA’s premier events. A number of racers have won the race more than ...
