With summer finally upon us, it’s time to get outside. As the whole family begins to shake loose and get back to their favorite recreational activities, it’s important to keep an eye on safety at all times. Here are a few of the most common summer sports injuries and ways you can avoid them. Sprains and strains Almost all of us have experienced a sprain or strain at some point, whether it be a pulled hamstring, sore shoulder or sprained ankle. Though these common injuries are similar, they aren’t interchangeable. “A sprain involves the stretching or tearing of your ...

Chuck Knox ‘brought great glory’ to Juniata College

When he became president of Juniata College in 2013, one of Jim Troha’s first acts was to hop on a plane to California to visit with Juniata’s favorite son. Troha sat on the back porch of Chuck Knox’s home in Anaheim, and the two smoked a cigar. Troha said the other day in reflection of Knox’s passing, “That was very cool.” Knox died at 86 on May 12 in Palm Springs from dementia. Though many of us unfortunately know the depths of the dreaded disease, “Anytime you mentioned Juniata, he knew that word, and that helped him understand who I was,” Troha said of their ...

The health benefits of walking fitness trackers can’t measure

Fitness trackers are a great way to monitor when and how much you exercise. They can also help you reach a daily fitness goal like 10,000 steps per day. But while trackers can help you meet your fitness goals, there are other benefits from exercise that they can’t track. Now that trapping season is in full swing, I feel this is a great time to share the tale of a furtaking mission recently completed by a very enthusiastic young raccoon catcher. My son, who is now in first grade, loves trying to catch raccoons. From the time I took him out to check our first set of traps, he was hooked. Each year we try and catch a few coons for population control. We have also released quite a few that were caught in live traps. The first coon River caught as a pre-schooler is proudly displayed at our cabin. The others he took that year were sold. Going into last ...

Outdoors TV: The good, the bad, the indifferent

I had the privilege this spring to be a part of an Archery Assassins filming session about my turkey call company and spring turkey hunting. Up until this point I had done nothing other than dabble in self inking a few hunts. A crew of three guys came into my small town of Front Royal, Virginia, from nearly 17 hours away in Kansas with hopes of harvesting a mature gobbler with their bows. No, we were not successful, but that’s not what this story is about. What a learning curve filming for an actual TV show was for me. It seemed there were cameras everywhere and that was ...
