PSU Altoona sinks Mount Aloysius
ALTOONA — The Penn State Altoona men’s tennis team celebrated seniors Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford) and Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata) on Wednesday evening, when the Lions posted 7-0 and 5-2 victories over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference rival Mount Aloysius at the Adler Tennis Courts.
After winning in No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1, in match one of tonight’s home doubleheader against Mount Aloysius, senior Nick Beard became the Lions’ all-time wins leader in singles with 47 wins. Beard entered today’s matches tied for the record of 46 career singles wins, sharing the record with former Lion Casey Hess (2021-2025).
Match One: Penn State Altoona 7, Mount Aloysius 0
In the first match of the doubleheader, Penn State Altoona (10-3, 5-1 AMCC) got the first point on the scoresheet after sweeping in doubles play. The Lions won all six in singles to achieve a seven-point match victory.
Beard and Gabriel Lopez (Wilmette, IL/New Trier Township) got their ninth win together in No. 1 singles, defeating their opponents 6-0. In No. 2 doubles, Ivan Bene (York, PA/Lancaster Country Day) and Wilhelm Grot (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) won 6-1 for their sixth victory as a duo. Hibbs and Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) teamed up for their fourth win, defeating their opponents 6-0.
The wins continued in singles play. Record breaking Beard got his 47th win in No. 1 singles after winning 6-2, 6-1. Bene battled for his seventh victory of the season, winning in No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-2. In the No. 3 spot, Lopez blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0 for his eighth victory of the season. Newell got his 10th victory in No. 4 singles after defeating his competitor 6-0, 6-1. In the No. 5 slot, Hibbs blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0 for his sixth victory of the season. In No. 6 singles, Grot got his eighth win following his 6-2, 6-1 win.
Match Two: Penn State Altoona 5, Mount Aloysius 2
In the second match of the home doubleheader, the Lions won two of three in doubles and four of six in singles to pick up their sixth AMCC victory.
The two seniors, Hibbs and Beard, teamed up for their first victory together, defeating their competitors 6-4 in the No. 1 spot. Lopez and Grot won 6-2 for their second win as a duo in the No. 2 matchup.
In No. 1 singles, Beard got his 48th singles win following his 6-0, 6-2 victory. Lopez bested his opponent in the No. 2 clash 6-2, 6-3. The Lions got shutout victories in both No. 3 and No. 4 singles as Newell and Hibbs each blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0.
Penn State Altoona men’s tennis will remain at the Adler Tennis Courts for their next match on Sunday, April 12, at 1 p.m. as they face Penn State Behrend in a major rematch.
