PSU wrestling routs Hoosiers, Terps

Over the course of 24 hours, the Penn State wrestling team unleashed an avalanche of points on two opponents, leaving their side of the ledger as pristine as newly fallen snow.

The No. 1 Nittany Lions (11-0, 5-0 B1G) inundated Indiana (6-3,1-2) 48-0 on Friday in Rec Hall before hitting the road to maul Maryland (4-6, 0-5) 51-0 on Saturday at Schanwald Pavilion in College Park, Maryland.

Penn State produced a blizzard of takedowns, building a 48-3 advantage against the Hoosiers and piling up a 47-2 total against the Terps.

Through 11 dual meets, Penn State has outscored its opponents 480-19 for an average dual meet score of 43.64-1.73.

The win over Maryland was the Nittany Lions’ sixth shutout in the last seven duals, including four of five in Big Ten duals, and the seventh overall, a team record. And the Lions extended their NCAA record dual meeting winning streak to 82.

“I think we have a strong team, obviously, a lot of good kids. And, you know, we don’t really focus or worry or think too much about rankings, right?” head coach Cael Sanderson said Friday night.

“It’s just getting the same just boring process of get better every day and every competition and just remain grateful for the opportunities that we have and all those other things will take care of themselves.”

In the two wins, Penn State scored bonus points in 19 of 20 bouts, including five falls, 10 technical falls and four major decisions.

That barrage of bonus points allowed eight Nittany Lions to remain undefeated. Six of them are ranked No. 1 at their respective weights. Two others are ranked Nos. 3 and 4.

No. 1 Luke Lilledahl (125 pounds) raised his record to 13-0 with a fall against IU and a technical fall against Maryland.

No. 4 Marcus Blaze (133) improved to 15-0 in his true freshman campaign. He scored 34 points over the weekend with a 19-4 technical fall and a 15-3 major decision.

No. 11 Braeden Davis (141) continues to show improving results after he was pulled from a redshirt year when Aaron Nagao was injured again and had to undergo another surgery. Davis was almost thrown to his back against Indiana, but recovered to win going away 24-10 and added an 18-4 major decision against Maryland.

“It didn’t bother me too much (giving up the first takedown). So, I’ve always kind of been taught to, you know, if something goes bad, just go and score another. So, I didn’t think of it too deeply. I’m just glad I didn’t get thrown on my back,” Davis said with a smile.

No. 1 Shayne Van Ness (149) is now 14-0 after a 51-point deluge over two bouts. Against the Hoosiers, he won 20-3. In the Maryland dual, he rallied from a 7-0 deficit, having to fight off his back and out of a cradle, and responded with nine takedowns and 30 points over the final two periods in a 31-15 tech fall.

“I think just having a short-term memory and not getting caught up in what happened before, just looking at focusing on scoring the next points is really just it,” Van Ness told the Penn State Sports Network.

“I definitely think I was in that kind of flow state where it didn’t matter if I was up 10 or down by 10, I was just going to be in there having fun and enjoying the moment.”

Like his classmate Blaze, No. 3 P.J. Duke (157) continues to impress. He’s now 13-0 with seven pins. He scored seven takedowns in a 21-5 technical fall in 3:16 against Indiana and scored a first-period fall in 1:54 against Maryland.

No. 1 Mitchell Mesenbrink (165) ran his record to 15-0 and is, in the minds of many, the clear favorite to win this year’s Hodge Trophy. He was on the mat for just 7:25 in earning a pin and a 15-0 technical fall.

No. 1 Levi Haines (174) is undefeated, too, at 14-0. He piled up 40 points over two duals, scoring technical falls in each by scores of 17-1 and 23-8.

Penn State’s newest No. 1, Rocco Welsh (184), improved to 13-0 with a decision and a fall in 3:52.

No. 1 Josh Barr (197) is now 12-0 despite getting a late start to the season as he rehabbed a rib injury. Over the weekend he posted a 14-6 major decision and a 19-4 tech fall.

Finally, at 285, No. 12 Cole Mirasola is perhaps the hottest Nittany Lion in the lineup. Over his last three bouts, he’s overwhelmed opponents with a pair of first-period technical falls and then a second-period fall, his fourth of the year, in 3:56 against Maryland.

Penn State hits the mats again at 8 p.m. Friday night against Nebraska in the Bryce Jordan Center.
