Lions host Hoosiers, visit Terps

UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State (9-0, 3-0 B1G) has a two-dual weekend in front of it, beginning with a home dual against Indiana (6-2, 1-1 B1G) on Friday, Jan. 23, in Rec Hall. Action begins at 7 p.m. Two days later, Penn State is at Maryland (4-5, 0-4 B1G) on Sunday, Jan. 25, for a 12 p.m. dual on the B1G network. All rankings are InterMat/InterMat TPI.

The Nittany Lions are coming off a very successful Big Ten road swing last weekend. Penn State beat Iowa 32-3 in Iowa City last Friday night, handling the Hawkeyes their worst home loss in 60 years. Two days later, Penn State shut out Northwestern 51-0, picking up bonus points in each bout. The Lions improved to 9-0 on the year with five shutouts.

Penn State has ten wrestlers ranked by InterMat. Luke Lilledahl is 11-0 and No. 1 at 125. Marcus Blaze is 13-0 and No. 4 at 133. Braeden Davis is 6-1 and No. 11 at 141. Shayne Van Ness is 12-0 and No. 1 at 149. PJ Duke is 11-0 and No. 3 at 157. Mitchell Mesenbrink is 13-0 and No. 1 at 165. Levi Haines is 12-0 and No. 1 at 174. Rocco Welsh is 11-0 and No. 1 at 184. Josh Barr is 10-0 and No. 1 at 197. Cole Mirasola is 10-2 and No. 12 at 285.

A reminder that per NCAA rules, when two wrestlers from the same team meet in a tournament, the result is not official as THEY ARE NOT OFFICIAL MATCHES. It does not count as a win or a loss. Please see rule 9, section 6, article 4, found on page 79 of the official 2025-26 NCAA Wrestling rule book.

“Art. 4. Non-Allowable ISRF Matches. Matches between teammates, against opponents who are not listed on an institutional roster, a club-level wrestler, a prospective student-athlete or an armed services student-athlete shall not be counted.”

Indiana enters the weekend with a 6-2 overall record, 1-1 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers have six ranked wrestlers. Jacob Moran is No. 11 at 125, Henry Porter is No. 25 at 141, Tyler Lillard is No. 19 at 165, Derek Gilcher is No. 29 at 174, Sam Goin is No. 15 at 184 and Gabe Sollars is No. 14 at 197. Penn State leads the all-time series with IU 24-0-1, including a 46-0 win on Jan. 14, 2024, in Rec Hall in the last meeting.

Maryland will enter Sunday’s dual 4-5 overall, 0-4 in conference action. The Terrapins have three ranked wrestlers. Braxton Brown is No. 15 at 133, Carter Young is No. 7 at 149 and Branson John is No. 13 at 197. Penn State leads the all-time series 48-1-2, including the last 32. Penn State won 35-10 in the last meeting, Feb. 9, 2025, in Rec Hall last season.

Penn State continues conference action next weekend with two dual meets. The Nittany Lions are at Iowa on Friday, Jan. 16, for a 7 p.m. Eastern dual and then at Northwestern on Sunday, Jan. 18, for a 3 p.m. Eastern matchup.
