Singleton opts out of bowl; new OC coming
From Mirror reports
The Penn State football office needs a turnstile.
Between new hires to coach Matt Campbell’s staff and opt-outs to the Pinstripe Bowl, it’s been a busy place.
First, the opt-outs.
Four-year starting tailback Nick Singleton informed the Reading Eagle, his hometown paper, that he will not play in the Dec. 27 Pinstripe Bowl vs. Clemson.
His father, Tim, confirmed the news to Rich Scarcella of the Eagle (Singleton’s hometown paper) on Thursday afternoon.
Singleton finished his career as Penn State’s all-time leader in all-purpose yards (5,586), rushing touchdowns (45) and overall touchdowns (55). He ranks fourth in career rushing with 3,461 yards.
He joins defensive tackle Zane Durant and safety Zakee Wheatley as opt-outs. Others are expected as well.
Meanwhile, according to Pete Nakos of On3.com, Iowa State offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser will follow Campbell to PSU.
Andy Kotelnicki served as the Lions’ OC for the past two seasons.
Mouser was with Campbell for 10 seasons, the last two as the Cyclones’ OC. He also coached the tight ends.
Penn State is also hiring offensive line coach Ryan Clanton and safeties coach Deon Broomfield. Both were on Campbell’s staff at Iowa State.
The status on Phil Trautwein and Anthony Poindexter, who coaches the O-line and safeties at PSU, remains unclear.
A day earlier, it was reported that defensive coordinator Jim Knowles would join the Tennessee staff and running backs coach Stan Drayton is headed to South Carolina.
Two staff members – tight ends coach Ty Howle and quarterbacks coach Danny O’Brien – are joining James Franklin at Virginia Tech.
