Eagles get Howell from Vikings, who sign Wentz
PHILADELPHIA — Carson Wentz is back in the NFL and Sam Howell is on the move again.
The Minnesota Vikings are signing Wentz to backup quarterback J.J. McCarthy and trading Howell to the Philadelphia Eagles, two people with knowledge of the decisions told The Associated Press on Sunday.
Both people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the teams haven’t announced the moves. ESPN first reported the deals.
The reigning Super Bowl champion Eagles are sending a 2026 fifth-round pick and 2027 seventh-rounder to Minnesota for Howell and a 2027 sixth-rounder, one of the people said.
Wentz, who spent last season backing up Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City, was the No. 2 overall pick by the Eagles in 2016. He finished third in NFL MVP voting the following season but tore his ACL in December and watched Nick Foles lead Philadelphia to its first Super Bowl victory.
Wentz started for Indianapolis in 2021 and Washington in 2022. He was a backup with the Los Angeles Rams in 2023.
Howell replaced Wentz as the starting QB for the Commanders in 2023. He played behind Geno Smith in Seattle last year before going to Minnesota. Howell joins Tanner McKee behind Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia. The Eagles also currently have Dorian Thompson-Robinson and rookie Kyle McCord.
In NFL preseason action on Saturday:
CARDINALS 20, RAIDERS 10
GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Las Vegas Raiders wrapped up their preseason with a loss to the Arizona Cardinals as starters, including Geno Smith, saw limited action but impressed. Smith threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to rookie Dont’e Thornton Jr. Backup quarterback Aidan O’Connell left the game with a fractured wrist and is expected to miss six to eight weeks. The Raiders’ defense recorded five sacks, while the Cardinals’ Clayton Tune threw for 83 yards and a touchdown.
49ERS 30, CHARGERS 23
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Trey Lance’s return to the Bay Area led to three straight punts for the Los Angeles Chargers. They fell to the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday night in their final exhibition game. Curtis Robinson returned an interception for a touchdown, giving San Francisco the win. Lance, now with the Chargers, struggled against a 49ers defense missing many starters. He completed five of eight passes for 38 yards. Niners kicker Jake Moody missed an extra point, raising questions about his reliability.
DOLPHINS 14, JAGUARS 6
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Tua Tagovailoa threw a 25-yard touchdown pass and was sacked twice in his only action of the preseason, and the Miami Dolphins topped the Jacksonville Jaguars. Mike Boone ran for a 7-yard touchdown for Miami, and Jacksonville’s Cam Little kicked field goals of 59 and 43 yards. While the Jaguars rested their starters, many of the Dolphins’ regulars played into the second quarter. Tagovailoa connected with Malik Washington for a TD early in the second quarter and found Pharaoh Brown for a 2-pointer.
BILLS 23, BUCCANEERS 19
TAMPA, Fla. — Shane Buechele threw for 278 yards and one touchdown and the Buffalo Bills edged the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen didn’t play for the Bills, finishing his first preseason without seeing any game action. Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield also didn’t take any snaps in exhibition games. Players competing for snaps, backup positions and roster spots battled for 60 minutes — except for Bucs rookie safety Shilo Sanders, who was ejected for throwing a punch at Zach Davidson and later waived.
BROWNS 19, RAMS 17
CLEVELAND — Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski went with Tyler Huntley instead of Shedeur Sanders when the Browns had a chance for a winning preseason drive. With Huntley, Cleveland drove to Andre Szmyt’s 37-yard field goal as time expired against the Los Angeles Rams. Jordan Waters scored a 2-yard run, putting the Rams ahead 17-16 with two minutes left. Huntley then led a 46-yard drive, setting up Szmyt’s winning kick. Joe Flacco threw a TD pass, and Dillon Gabriel directed two scoring drives as the Browns went 3-0 in the preseason. Dresser Winn completed 15 of 23 passes for the Rams.
COLTS 41, BENGALS 14
CINCINNATI — Third-stringer Riley Leonard completed 15 of 20 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown as the Indianapolis Colts routed the Cincinnati Bengals. Neither team played its starters. Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, who had a strong preseason, sat this one out. So did his backup, Jake Browning. Desmond Ridder, a University of Cincinnati product, started for the Bengals and completed 8 of 20 passes for 75 yards with an interception and a rushing TD. Colts safety Daniel Scott had a pick-6 against Ridder.
PACKERS 20, SEAHAWKS 7
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Malik Willis bounced back from an early interception and threw a touchdown pass to Romeo Doubs as the Green Bay Packers defeated the Seattle Seahawks. Green Bay forced four turnovers and sacked rookie Jalen Milroe five times. With quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Drew Lock on the sideline, Milroe played the whole game and lost three fumbles. The third-round pick from Alabama went 13 of 24 for 148 yards with a touchdown and rushed for 31 yards on seven carries.
TEXANS 26, LIONS 7
DETROIT — Kyle Allen threw a 33-yard, go-ahead touchdown pass late in the first quarter to rookie Isaac TeSlaa, solidifying their roles with the Detroit Lions in a loss against the Houston Texans in the preseason. Allen has established himself as Jared Goff’s backup, beating out Hendon Hooker. TeSlaa earned a spot in the receiver rotation behind Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams. Texans rookie quarterback Graham Mertz made a bid to earn a spot on a 53-man roster or at least an invite to be on a practice team.
RAVENS 30, COMMANDERS 3
LANDOVER, Md. — Keyon Martin returned an interception for a touchdown, Tyler Loop kicked a 61-yard field goal and the Baltimore Ravens completed an unbeaten preseason with a romp over the Washington Commanders. It was Washington that snapped Baltimore’s record streak of 24 preseason wins two years ago. That was the start of four losses in five exhibition games for the Ravens, but then they went 3-0 this year. Star quarterbacks Lamar Jackson and Jayden Daniels weren’t playing.
BRONCOS 28, SAINTS 19
NEW ORLEANS — Bo Nix passed for 110 yards and a touchdown to Courtland Sutton as the Denver Broncos defeated the New Orleans Saints. Saints rookie Tyler Shough ran for an 11-yard touchdown as he and second-year pro Spencer Rattler battled to be New Orleans’ starting QB. Rattler started and completed 5 of 8 passes for 43 yards. He led two drives that culminated with Blake Grupe field goals. Shough was 12 of 20 for 102 yards and also led two scoring drives. Sam Ehlinger replaced Nix in the second quarter and completed 22 of 31 passes for 198 yards and a TD.
